Although i agree at close range mdrew, at anything more than a couple of feet back, many people who've come over to view our speakers did not know.
It may depend somewhat on lighting and the finish as well. I imagine the black oak would be harder to determine at a distance.

What i find really gives it away are the sharper edges. Some of the nicer wood finishes on pricier brands tend to have ever so slightly rounded or smoothed edges, perhaps to take away the possibility that one might try shaving with their speaker.

Shaving, what is shaving? Oh yeah, my memory is jogged. I believe that was an ancient flesh ripping torture practiced by the Macedonians on their enemies via the use of Schick razors. That happened to me once. Darn those treacherous Macedonians.

In my home they stand out like a sore thumb. If they weren't stitting on real wood flooring, it wouldn't be as aparent.

Mike, I'm a city boy and I've never seen a real tree. Do you mean that a Boston Cherry tree doesn't look just like my M22s?

Did you just make a joke John? I didn't think engineers could do that.

If you're serious, it might look more realistic if you put a house plant on top of it.

You guys are too funny:)

That was a reason I picked black. At least there is no doubt it's NOT natural. And it looks great too.

I'm confused here. the "custom veneers" are they real wood veneer panels? or vinyl pics like the um..... regular Axioms are? If they indeed are vinyls, why on earth do they cost more money? there is not a single bit MORE work involved, between application of one vinyl picture "veneer" and another. afterall more money is not charged for the 4 "regualr" vinyls that have been avail. that would be a flat out wrong to charge more money for simply a different "picture" of wood. If these customs are indeed real veneers of diff types of wood ... well the cost increase in my view is justified , just not diff. vinyl. ok, shoot me now

The latest Axiom newsletter gives some insight as to the process. If you're wondering about the price, check the custom page. It looks like the VS versions of the speakers have been added.

The finishes currently available at Custom Shop are NOT the wood finishes. Dennis and I have been arguing as to whether or not they are vinyl (I thought they are; Dennis thinks they're something else; neither of us think they are wood). Regardless you'll have to ask Axiom why they cost more. my guess is it's because those particular finishes cost THEM more, but I could be wrong.

Economies of scale, my friends... If I order (for example) a pair of Vermont Maple M50s, they have to get out the Vermont Maple vinyl which I'm sure they purchase in lower quantities than the Boston Cherry, therefore losing volume discount, and pay individual attention to my speakers.

BTW, it's the same stuff on the custom finish and normal finish; I've compared mine to Peter's Boston Cherry M22s and my Manswood Beech QS4s.

And if you think wood is going to cost just $90/pair, you're smoking something. Did you see how much work goes into those things? It probably costs Axiom more than $90 just to do the staining!
