My TV room is not very good for surround sound.I now have a pair of QS-4s on the back wall and I'm not real happy with the effect I'm receiving.My question is : since I only have one side wall that is fesable to use ,would it work to have one speaker on the side and one on the back wall?

What is it about the QS-4s that you are not happy with?

frzoll, I have a set of QS8's on the back wall, and was initially underwhelmed when I first got them as well. There was nothing I could do about position, plus, I was used to direct firing surrounds. As a result, I was running the Q's really "hot". (Quite a bit louder than they should have been) Not long after, it became too distracting so I turned them back down. Now I couldn't imagine going back to a DF surround. Rain and wind are frighteningly real. And they do light up when a "hard" pan or effect is SUPPOSED to happen.

I must 2nd the firt part of your reply.I set up a system for a friend this weekend and was NOT happy at all with the QS-4.I did not have time to adjust any of the settings and was planning on doing it this weekend.Maybe I have to get used to the Quadpole vs. DF sound.I hope I can tweak it a bit and get a bit better sound out of it.

Frank, good to hear from you again. Properly calibrated, the QSs will give you an excellent surround effect. You didn't describe your room in detail and your distance from the back wall, but if you're not more than about 3-4' from the back wall you should do fine with a speaker on the side wall just a few inches from the back wall and about 6' up and a speaker on the back wall at the same height and spread widely to within a few inches of where the side wall would have been. In other words, both QSs should be about the same distance from the listening position.

Yep, took quite a while to get my head/ears around it. My parents bought their first Dolby Surround setup around 1986. So for 20 years, I have been conditioned to pinpoint surround info from behind. The Q's are a whole different thing. They throw a very wide, disperse sound field, and are hard to locate where they are. Honestly, at first I didn't care for it. But now that I have grown used to them, I find that DF's are distracting.

Please describe your Q position in relationship to the seating position? Do you have them spread out enough? How high are they in relation to the listener? Can they be ceiling mounted?

The prime listening position is against the back wall,about 9' from the TV.The room is 20x 12 with the TV at one end on the only wall that's long enough for the TV and front speakers.The other end of the room is taken up by two short hallways,one to the bathroom and the other goes up stairs.The QS-4s each about 6' from my chair and 5'above my head.They seem to do the job ok ,I just thought maybe a change would make for some improvement.

Frank, if the QS4s are separated about 12', that should be enough. It's usually suggested to have them 2-3' above ear level, but 5' should still be okay(if that's what you meant), although if you want to change anything you might lower them a bit. So, it doesn't seem that there's much wrong with the positioning, and hopefully you've calibrated their levels. You haven't said specifically what you think is missing(keep in mind that the surrounds aren't supposed to be constantly loud and drawing attention to themselves), so it's hard to make suggestions.
