i was initially in 5 channel stereo and didn't realize that the receiver didn't switch over automatically to dolby digital . i am now in the auto setting, just to get started and things are better.. i actually bought a radio shack meter but was only expecting to use it for fine tuning. ray3 had a good analogy about the denon manual, about drinking from the fire hose and was right about 5-channel stereo. john k. i just thought that i might still be missing something with my setup with my receiver, to little effects are going to my surrounds. thanks to all that are experiencing the real deal, maybe i'll figure it out soon, thanks.

Good luck with your setup, don't hesitate to ask any questions, alot of that own Denons have gone through the same thing. Another thing you may want to try is playing a different DVD to see if the effects change, it may just be that movie.

Here is a thread about movies with good surround effects. See if you have one of these and try it.

thanks for the suggestion, last night i watched king kong and there were alot more effects coming through the surrounds, but i still have my surround volume cranked up twice as loud as the auto setup suggests just to hear them. i'm starting to think that with all the help i'm getting from this board my system will be up and running well in know time. next weeks project is pulling out the radio shack meter and that avia disk i have, any advise.

This sounds more and more like a must. I always check mine even after an auto set-up
