I have M-22s and an Onkyo receiver paired with the original subwoofer that came with the Onkyo HTIB 6.1 set-up. The sub does a lot of muddy bass rumbling but doesn't do punch at all. So my question is about the science of where to set the crossover point. I can choose 60, 80, 100, 120, or 150.

I'm thinking if the sub sucks, that I want to let it do as little as possible, so does that mean the crossover should be set lower at 60? And does that mean, ideally, that the M22's will do the work down to 60 and then the sub takes over?

And if I wanted the sub to do more work and take over more frequencies I would raise the crossover point?

I know it may not be this simple and I can't really tell too much difference in the sound but would like to know why I'm doing what I'm doin'.

The M22s don't reach too low, so if you set the sub crossover too low you may leave a gap in the response. If it sounds that bad, don't use the sub. I bad sounding sub will sound bad no matter the crossover.

Sell it and buy a better one!

With my M22's, I have the sub (a small Yamaha YST-SW215) crossed over at about 65-70 and I have the volume turned up a little over half way. It sounds pretty even and punchy this way. It seems like anything above those settings results in boomy and separated bass which doesn't mesh well with the speakers.

Sonic, you have me confused when you say 65-70 on your crossover. I would assume you would be using the crossover settings in your Denon AVR, so you would not want to use the Yamaha's sub knob. You would want to turn it all the way clockwise to get it out of the way, or use the "bypass" selection if it has one...
