I am considering the purchase of the 30GB Apple iPod which I believe normally retails for about $299. My main goal is that i would like to purchase a device in which i can dump most, if not all, of my music (CD's, MP3's, etc) onto a portable device that I could then plug into my home stereo, car stereo, friend's stereo, etc... Basically I'd like to make my home music collection very portable.

I thought the iPod was my answer but after reading into some of the specs of the iPod i was really disappointed that it doesn't seem to support a digital connection for stereo usage. I have no interest in purchasing their "hi-fi" speaker because i'm pretty sure it can't hold a candle to my M60's + SVS PB10.

Are their any other recommendations out there for portable MP3 players that have this sort of thing or is the Apple iPod as good as it gets right now?

Thank you!

Well, not sure what your budget is...but you could always check on a device such as this one...with 100GB's, that can do almost anything....

Archos -- B&H

Hope that helps. B&H also has lots of other things, that could fit the bill. Of course...u can try to find cheaper prices/reviews elsewhere...

I have the 30gig photo iPod. I have my entire cd collection plus some odds and ends mp3's as well. I have 300+ cds (haven't counted in awhile), and I'm only using 13 gig.
I do believe all my mp3 were recorded at 192 kbps. I travel for work so my ipod goes with me everywhere, on the plane, in the office and in the hotel so I always have everything I want to listen.

Harman Kardon has an iPod dosking station, The Bridge, that works with the AVR 140, 240, 340 and 740 models. You can control the iPod directly through your remote control with an on screen display. I was disappointed that it didn't work with my AVR 630 model.

I think you would have to check with each receiver. The HK ipod Bridge will only work with it's own models. I don't know if there are any generic docking stations that will work with different brand receivers.

Personally I think the IPOD is a great product. However, I would never recommend it to anyone because of the necessity to use ITUNES. I truly feel that there are other products out there that do the same thing and do not tie you down to a software.....

I think the point is that after you have loaded it with content, the iPod requires you to use its D/A converter instead of providing a digital stream to an external one (presumably in your receiver). I know smart people are keen that high bitrate MP3's are indisguishable from the CD, but I'm not quite convinced yet.

There are digital outs in the dock connector, it's just a matter of finding a dock that uses them. I'm sure there's stuff out there.

I would recommend an I pod, i have 2 ipods, one that I have music/pod casts on and it is pluged into my home theater when ever I am at home, it is the only device, that I play music from though my home theater.. and my other ipod is a vido ipod which I have full of movies. Depending on your situation in your life, if you only want music the get the 30 gig, but if you think you might want to put any movies on your ipod then get the 60.. as far as only working with itunes, big deal itunes is a freaking great program. Very easy to use, and you have the ablity to do pretty much what ever you want, just have to spend a little bit of time to figure it out.

They are

(indisguishable)

WMA > AAC BTW

Which leads me to the #1 reason for not wanting/recomeneding an ipod. I'm sure they are fine devices but I require players that can do wma/mp3. AAC is not as good IMO.
