Yes, you do have to listen for the differences, but they are relatively easy to hear. In passing by a room with one playing over the other, a person would never notice. However for myself, a person who sits down to listen to music i hate to be bothered by a heavy bass, or a sharp high end, so the differences matter.

It was great to listen to all those.
Next up, some vintage Boston A100s vs the A150s and my Axioms!!

Thanks for the time you took comparing, testing and sharing your thoughts with us, Chess. Each of these speakers has subtle advantages over each other in different areas, I guess it comes down to personal preferance in the end. Excellent and unbiased review.

I do think, however, that one point should be made about the MA vs M60 comparo in regards to $$. The only MA's comparable dollarwise to the Axiom M60(with real veneer), were the Silver series MA's, the GR60's($5000-6000) are 2-3 times the $$ of the custom wood M60s, a very substancial difference.

Thanks again for comparo, I have yet to hear the Gold series MA's(curious about them) but have auditioned the RS6 and RS8s in the past, and the 8's were noticably bass heavy. The RS6's sounded a little 'cleaner' to me when I heard them.

Half of communication is listening. You can't listen with your mouth.

I like the finish on the Tannoys. And, as I've stated before, the cherry on the Monitor Audios remains one of my all time favorites.

Yes the MA Gold Reference series are more expensive than M60s (at the time i found the GR60s online for about $3400 per pair if i recall), but the M80s with wood veneer, the most expensive finish you can get, started to get into the range of the MA Golds (M80s with rosewood and piano gloss finish are $2700 a pair). Hence, depending on the MA and Axiom model and finish they could overlap in prices.

I would agree that the best comparison with MA and Axiom has been the Silver series. I did a review of these two awhile back as well, though not an A/B test unfortunately.
See the link here..

The Golds i've found to be bass heavy. The S8s also bass heavy. I preferred the S6s myself and now that they have a Platinum line out with a true 3 way driver design, i'm guessing some of that bassy sound is more controlled. I've heard the new tweeter. Amazingly accurate, sharp.
