I think a definite figure is still unknown because of the use of new cone and surround materials, which were usually the limiting factor in age back when the main material for surrounds was foam, and paper in cones. Over time the capacitors in the crossover network may, or may not need to be replace depending on their age and type of capacitor that they are.

Of course, as with anything the way its treated and taken care of will also have an effect on the life expectancy.

I dont think 40-50 years is unreasonable for a modern speaker like the axioms.

Before I bought my Axioms, I was using some AR5s which I purchased in 1970. I purchased my Axioms in 2004.

I still have a set of Cerwin Vega's dating from the mid 1980's.

My sub is a pretty good example.

In our early days of HT we needed a sub, right!? Right!

With luck I managed to locate a stereo amp in the attic that belonged to our eldest daughter that she'd left up there cause it only had one channel. We also had an old home theater speaker....16mm FILM home theater! It had a 10" full range driver that, while 70hz was the lowest movies were good for in those days, we thought what the heck, wouldn't hurt to try it. Ran it full-range on the amps built-in EQ for a few minutes to see how it sounded. "Ok"! Put it to 50hz "max" and everything else "min" and hooked it to our receiver sub out. Worked pretty good! Probably got cleanly to 'bout the mid 40s.

Worked great for a couple years til our youngest grand daughter grabbed a handfull of volume and swung it to max. Our M3s came through it unscathed. The sub drivers paper cone did not.

We bought the home theater movie sustem in 1946.
Rich.

....we're still using the ancient speaker cabinet to house our new 12" sub driver which is happy in a 1.652 cu. ft. box, with a new 280W plate amp mounted away from the cabinet. The cabinet is made of some of the best quality 3/8" plywood available in 1946, and really asks for early retirement too, now and then.

Nope, I tell it; two more years til you're 62.

Good speakers tend to last longer than I can hold out for a set of new ones
