Rick got me hooked on music DVD’s, so now I’m looking to order a few more. Of the very few I have, both sound and video quality vary as much as CD’s and regular DVD’s. The good ones are quite a treat to watch on the big screen at around a 100 db’s, it feels almost like being there.

So does anyone have any that they’d like to note as having real good sound and video quality? Or conversely, the bad ones to avoid?

Mike, which ones do you have currently?

Depending on your tastes, these are excellent:

Fleetwood Mac - The Dance (DD 5.1)
The Eagles - Hell Freezes Over (DTS 5.1)
AC/DC - Live At Donington (DD 5.1)

Queen - Greatest Video Hits 1 is just ok (DTS 5.1). They try too hard with funky surround pans and to my ears, it takes away from the songs.

Good live rock DVDs:

I have all of the SRV dvds and they are all worth owning. Rush R30 is another good one. If you like this kind of music Josh Groban also has a few I really like.

This is also a safe and good site to buy from.

The ones I watch most are Tori Amos: Welcome to Sunny Florida and Guster On Ice: Live From Portland Maine. The Tori Amos DVD doesn't even use the center channel, which I find odd, but it still sounds very good. Besides those, I like several of the performances on The Best of Sessions at West 54th: Volume 1. Out of all of the music DVDs I've bought, those are the only ones I'd recommend heartily. For DualDiscs with bonus video on the DVD sides, I like the live performances on Nellie McKay's "Get Away From Me" and Fiona Apple's "Extraordinary Machine", though "Extraordinary Machine" is only in 2-channel stereo.

Here's my 3 picks...mostly due to audio:

Kraftwerk - "Minimum Maximum". If you like electronic dance music, I HIGHLY recommend this DVD. They use visuals on a huge screen which is sometimes brought full screen on your own tv. They use some cheesy and minimalistic effects, but that's just how they are! As you can imagine, there are limitless ways to do a 5.1 audio mix of techno music. Well, these guys (who did the mix themselves) had a bit of fun using all the channels, yet didn't go overboard. I can't praise the audio quality enough...it is simply outstanding!

Porcupine Tree - "Arriving Somewhere". First of all, the music by these guys is excellent. It's hard to describe them...a mix of progressive rock and hard rock, I suppose. Well, I just picked up this DVD last night and although their concert is visually no frills, the audio was superb...and that was just the stereo mix! I haven't even listened to the 5.1 DTS track yet. Anyway, the musicianship and the tightness of the band is incredible.

Dido - "Live". For something more pop oriented. The audio of this DVD is supurb as well. Some think Dido is dull and boring, but she puts a lot of effort into her live concert performances. Her backing band is excellent and she's got wonderful stage presence as well.

As far as MY tastes go, they are eclectic. If I had to pick one genre over all the others, I suppose it would be Alt rock. Instead of listing everything I like, it’s easier to list everything I don’t like.

I can’t stand Rap or anything closely resembling rap. If Kid Rock would ditch the rapping BS he does, I’d like his music.
I can’t stand dance club music. When my daughter was a teenager, she ruined me for life with that stuff.
Don’t much care for some of the techno stuff that drones on forever without any change in pitch/tone/beat and just seams to repete itself over and over……don't know how else to describe it. It gives me a hell of a headache.

I’m going to have to get that Pink Floyd for sure. It seams to be on just about everyone’s favorite list.

I do like Green Day Mark. They are one of my favorite groups. I didn’t EVER listen to them until American Idiot came out and I bought that based off one song. Since that CD, I’ve bought several others regretting that I didn’t listen to them years ago.

I got the John Fogarty DVD and love it. The sound in DTS and video are exceptional. It looks damn near HD. I also have the ACDC Live from Donnington, but wasn’t all that impressed with the video. Sounded great, but the video wasn’t very crisp.

Mike I'll second (3rd, 4th??) that P.U.L.S.E. recommendation, it's certainly well worth watching and having. Wife and I watched it the other night and for some reason I (we, but she won't admit it) kept having an urge to go find the old roach clip ... from way back, of course.


The drum solo was Ginger Baker on 'Toad' from the second disc of the Cream: Royal Albert Hall '05 DVD ... a very good DVD as well. Crank that song loud enough with the 80s/600 and you'll swear somebody was beatin' the living daylights out of you right in the middle of the chest ... nice!

For those blues fans: Eric Clapton's Sessions with Robert J. It has a high resolution soundtrack and was the notorious DVD that clipped and shorted the Denon monoblocks at Alan's party.

Paul Van Dyk - Global - Great songs in DD and DTS with interesting video to go with it, of his tours.

Crystal Method - Legion of Boom - Awesome DTS remaster

NIN - The Downward Spiral - Completely amazing remaster of this album in DD.

NIN - With Teeth - Again, latest album in DD and its mixed VERY well.

BT - This binary Universe - I just picked this up. It's a DTS album with CGI based videos to go with it. I believe BT completely composed this for multichannel audio in mind. I haven't had a chance to watch it yet.
