The price difference between the M22/EP500 combination and the M60/EP350 is around $40 Canadian.

If you had a choice, which would you pick? My room is 25x20 more or less 25x20. The couch will be about 10-12 feet from the TV.

Would your choice change if you were going to listen more to music or watch more movies?

Thanks,
Jared

Hi Jared, I am in a similar room setup as you. I am in the process of setting up and tweaking, but right now I can say I am glad I went with the M22/EP500 combo. When properly setup, the soundstage is seamless - I am noticing a solid bottom end and clear mids and highs for music, but I fiddled with the "Front-Large" option to get a fuller mid range guitar sound. For movies the bass just fills the room without feeling "boomy" (speakers set to "Small").
If you are purchasing for only movies -go with the M22/500, for a combo of music movies - m22/500. I cannot comment on music with the M60's but I would guess that M60's with 350 would do very well for music only.

Good question. That's a tight horserace. For movies I would go with the M22/500 combo. The deeper/clean bass output of the 500 would make movie watching a more involving experience and because you would likely cross the speakers at 80hz you wouldn't miss any sounds with the M22.

For music. Well I'm biased because IMO its tough to match the performance of a full range balanced floorstander. No phase, blending issues etc. The M60 scores very well in that department. Though for those that prefer more bass in music the 350 makes alot of sense.

Another vote for M22/500 unless you want to play really loud. Going with VP150 over VP100 will help for loud movies, although it won't help so much with loud music.

That is a pretty good sized room, hmmmm. I would have to say for music you would have to get the m60s, they are killer in the bass department above where the subs reach in frequency, and play lower than the 22's. For HT the 350 is good, but the 500 is in another league, again that is a pretty good sized room.

I would say go for the gusto and get m60's/500 Order from the Factory Outlet and save 10% Or, you could get 50's/500

Get the M60s and save up for the 500.

Thanks for all the responses. I was already planning on ordering from the Factory Outlet.

My actual choice may depend a bit on furniture and my wife, but I'll go for the 500 if I can. We'll see if she gets convinced to go for the M60/500 combo.

The EP 500 is not as big as it looks....I'd say go for it!

I agree as well. You've got a decent sized room. M60ti/EP500. If you need to wait awhile and save up some extra coin, do it.

To answer your question directly. I'd go for the M22/EP500, but you'll find that when you add the cost of the M22 stands you are not saving a whole lot of money Vs the M60s ... and those towers look better for WAF IMHO.

If for movie veiwing I would go with the M22/EP500 you are going to cutoff at 80 hz. Also the extra balls the 500 has will make up in the difference.
If you play alot of music I would tkae the M60 setup plus unless you listn to alot of opera/classical the 350 should do the trick.

You still would use an 80hz crossover even with m60's and set them to small, this is not specific to just bookshelfs.

Of course, there are alot of DIY options for stands that will perform just as well as $300 stands...

"TNT Stubby Stand"

For a total of $37 per pair and they look pretty decent? Makes the M22s look alot cheaper.

I have considered this.

Much depends on the final choice of furniture for the basement. If the M22 won't fit, then I agree that the floors will be better than buying stands.

I know that if they are on shelves, they have to be as far forward as possible to avoid the near field reflection problem.

Part of the motivation for the question was to see how flexible I could be at that price point for placement options.

Actually, my wife seems to be very much against floor standing speakers. I think she thinks they are too big, boxy, and space consuming.
