Okay, here's the quandry. I live in an apartment. It's an old building and has no insulation what so ever. I guess I've never heard my neighbors TV, but the windows are single pane and I can hear most stuff outside. The living room is 11x12 and the TV, fronts, center and (idealy) the sub will be on the outside wall.

I'm struggling with different speaker configuration deciding which would be best for me given my small room. I'd prefer to have the M60's with an eye to the future, but I don't want them to be so powerful that I'll always have to use them whisper quiet to keep my neighbors happy.

Right now I have a Onkyo HTIB system and it's okay. Nothing impressive. So unimpressive that I don't even have the surrounds hooked up right now.

Does anyone have any input? Should I just get M60's and use the Onkyo sub? No sub at all? The M22's and a sub (probably the HSU VTF-3)?

I'm open to any and all suggestions. I'm most concerned about having to utilize great speakers at such a low volume I won't ever be impressed by them.

It's not the size but the volume, methinks. And bass carries farther and is more annoying to neighbors. Treble won't rattle their china, so to speak. I think in that size of room a pair of M22tis plus a nice smaller sub would be fine. I have 22s and an EP350 in my roughly 12x16x9 room and the system can get very, very loud but also sounds great at what my wife would call "sane" levels (under 90db).

That being said, I think a pair of 60s even without the sub would sound good at lower levels in that room. They are fairly efficient speakers so they'll get loud in a hurry but they'll also play nice and quiet with little effort.

[Edited to call out the M60 Posse] Where the heck are you guys? Used to be someone even mentioned the 60s and y'all were out here singing their praises like a used-car salesman.

Ahoj,

I am an apartment dweller and was stumped between the M60s sans sub or some bookshelves avec sub. I chose the 60s route and couldn't be happier. I really don't need any more bass than the 60s give and don't even come close to getting away with what these speakers can do. Plus, I'm a bit future proofed for when I give up apartment life.

Cheers,

J

Thanks for the suggestions (and absurdity), I'm going to go the 60's route per everyones help. Anyone have the "high gloss cherry"? The words free upgrade have me pulling out the CC as we speak.

Just do it. You won't be sorry.

Someone posted pics of the HG cherry - I thought it looked great.

I think you'll be much happier in the long run by getting the M60's. They are awesome for music (even without a sub). For movies, you could continue to use your Onkyo sub until you move someplace else and have the money for an upgrade.

After completing your registration, you will receive an official M60 Posse badge and certificate.

I've seen it up close and personal. It's good looking, just wondering - you don't have kids, though? High gloss ANYTHING shows fingerprints.

No kids, no wife, no girlfriend. Which as I re-read my post suddenly struck me as a bit depressing. At least future girlfriends will have to accept the speakers going in!

That's the reason I'm buying myself an array of expensive Christmas presents. However, I'm really taking it up a notch this year.

I do however have two cats hopefully they don't make a mockery of my high gloss cherry...

I'm sure there are a lot of married men and women that would consider it liberating, not depressing.

I posted some pics of my High Gloss Cherry awhile ago. Here's another thread with some pics in the first post. And yes, the speakers really are THAT shiny . Notice the flash reflections in the pics of my setup. As for fingerprints, I haven't had a problem with them. They're usually invisible unless you get close enough and are looking specifically for them. As long as you avoid eating potato chips, bacon, and chicken wings before handling the speakers, you should be fine.

I'd almost talked myself into changing my order and going with one of the standard finishes, but those look great. I'm going to stick with them and wait the 4 weeks! Great photo's, thanks a bunch.

I've got five bucks that says the M60ti's set to large and playing alone will sound FAR superior to using them in conjunction with any sub that come with a HTIB setup.

It'll be a hard 4 weeks, but its definately worth the wait IMO. Wouldn't mind seeing some pics when you get them .

Luckily Axiom almost always beats the estimate.

Sure, I'll be happy to post pics when I get them! Then you can all have a good laugh over the single guy who stuffed a 61 inch DLP, M60's, a VP150, surrounds...and a couch...into his 9x12 living room. At this rate I'll replace the couch with a recliner and completely embrace anti-social behavior.

I agree with Spiff's assessment, I'm afraid my Onkyo sub will only hold the 60's back. I guess we'll see when it all shows up and I can start hooking up.

I need to do some thinking about my cabling this weekend. I had hopes of getting it all through monoprice but they're apparently out of speaker cable forever. Not sure how that happens.

Nick, considering shipping charges, the most cost-effective source(even after sales tax)for speaker wire often is a local Home Depot, Lowes, or other hardware or electrical supplier.

I agree with John. Although I have used monoprice and bluejeans cable for many items, there is nothing wrong with buying from HD, Lowes, or Menards. Many times you can get custom lengths right off the spool. For the most part, copper is copper, just make sure you get the appropriate gauge for your length of runs. I just used 12 AWG for all my speakers.

Good suggestion about the speaker wire, I'll get from home depot. That'll make it easier to only have to put in on order for the cables.

Exciting times! Just 3 1/2 weeks to go...should have ordered them in time for Christmas :-)

I don't really have anything to say right now, but I'm so giddy about my speakers I couldn't help but post. Any tips, suggestions, etc we can talk about?

I've got a Samsung 6188, Yamaha 2700, and axioms coming in the next 3 weeks !

Any input on any of that and/or configurations?
