I want to pick up a PS3 console for Blue Ray playback. I am not a gamer, and I don't want to get into it either for fear of loosing my soul to the gaming god. I am having trouble finding the core game console though. I don't need the 60 gig unit either, I just want the standard 20 gig.

From researching various places on the net, the PS3 supports the newer audio codecs while many stand alone BR players do not, and it's the most reasonably priced BR player. It seams weird to me to buy a game for movies and put it on my EQ rack, but nonetheless, here I am looking for one.

I've looked at the obvious places on line, Amazon, Best Buy, ToysRus. They either sell bundled units, or just the 60 gig unit, or they are out of stock.

Mike, if you want to get a 20 gig console alone your best bet is most likely eBay, they are going from anywhere between 475.00 and 500.00.
I would guess if you wait a couple months the PS3 will be available all over without having to pay for the bundle.

Ever thought of going HTPC. BluRay players for the PC are getting cheaper by the week and updating codecs is pretty easy.

This was my logic too behind my purchase of 20 gb PS3! and I found it on ebay back in mid december for $600 shipped brand new. Try it, it may be cheaper now!

Have you tried

I saw unbundled PS3's last week (can't remember if they were 20GB or 60GB) on Amazon. I went to the website to confirm that they were in stock at that time, though they sold out later that day.

If you go to AVS forum many people post that their local stores have them spilling out into the parking lot because nobody wants them.

I ended up buying one at Best Buy a couple weeks ago. Finally got around to hooking it up and popped in a movie today. My boy and I watched Decent. Pretty good flick. Found myself getting a bit nervous when they were crawling around in them itsy bitsy tunnels. I hell, I might as well admit it, this movie scared the piss out of me more than once. I hope this particular movie isn't considered one of the 'good ones' though. I've seen numerous HD-dvds that are much better looking. Some of my SD dvd's looked better than this one.

The multi channel PCM rocks though, and my stupid reciever would appear to be down sampling it to 48kHz from 96. Hopefully the new reciever won't do this, if it ever shows up.

I've got to get a real remote for this thing..... It's just weird using a gameing controller to watch movies. I think I might just buy a game or two too... Playing a game on an eight foot sreen in HD is somewhat apealing to me. Or maybe I better not, I'd never leave this room I suspect....

Yep, I've seen that movie on my PS3 and not impressed (with the video quality, the movie was good). Probably too dark in the caves for HD to show off. You probably noticed though that some fores scenes were pretty.

I bought their bluetooth remote last week at the local EB Games for USD 25. I also feeled weired using the game control for movies.

I only have two games, probably three later. Otherwise I would be wasting my time a lot LOL

What receiver are you waiting on?

I bought a Marantz, SR 8001. It showed up yesterday and after about six hours of re-routing cables, running the Audisy EQ and general 'figuring things out', ran the AVR through some tests. Too soon to comment a great deal on it, but everything works. This is something I couldn't ever get the HK 745 to do. I've got everything running through HDMI and all is well so far. I've got Lossless PCM multi channel from my X1, PS3 and I can even play SACD with the Oppo 970 and PS3.

I've got a MX 850 RF/IR remote and I want to integrate the PS3 into my system with this remote. It looks as if I have to buy a PS2 remote with external IR and a USB to PS2 adapter to do this. I might just stick with the PS3 blue tooth remote and have two remotes. Too bad Sony didn't think about this, but I reckon its first duty is being a gaming machine.
