When I bought my Axioms a couple of years ago the QS stands available were the wood/MDF type. Since then one has been knocked over by the mutts a couple of times and is now broken. I have decided to go ahead and buy a pair of FMBs and mount the QS8s on the wall. Now, because of windows, doors, and the coved ceiling my options are somewhat limited. The best option space-wise is on the rear wall on either side of of the picture window. I have about 3 feet on either side. For side placement the only options are almost back against the rear wall or on the far side of a door on one side and a window on the other. This would place the surrounds about 4 or 5 feet in front of the primary listening location.

What do you think?

PS because of the thick textured plaster on the ceiling I am not willing to use the FM Ceiling brackets. The hand texturing of the ceiling is pretty remarkable and I can't justify drilling holes through it. They sure knew how build a house in the 30's.

Mark, you didn't specifically give a key measurement, i.e. how far the listening position is from the back wall, but I gather that it's fairly close. If so, the common advice applies: putting them about 3' above ear level, either on the back wall spread out almost to the side walls, or the side walls almost at the back wall. It should make little difference. Side surrounds in a 5.1 setup should preferably be slightly farther back than directly to the side, rather than toward the front.

I originally had my q's 20 degrees or so forward due to a doorway. It was right on the edge of dolby specs but I didn't like it.Everything was still in front of me. I got some fmb's and moved the q's back near the back wall and it made a world or difference. Having the q's that far forward was just a tease.

I think that the side surrounds could be infront a little as long as you have 6.1 or 7.1 to fill in the rear. If it is just 5.1 I find that the surrounds in front give you a weird feeling of being behind a partition and the movie takes place just in front of you. So I would vote for the surrounds to be mounted behind the listening position.

Yes, the viewing area is within a few feet of the rear wall. I think the rear wall is the best place for them in this scenario but I just wanted some input as to whether placing them at the sides was worth the effort if that were to be clearly a superior position.
