I've been reading the threads here and see that it's recommended to use an SPL Meter to adjust the level of the subs and speakers using the Receiver's test tones. Unfortunately my receiver does not provide a test tone for the sub. So the question is how do I set the level of the sub??

get the Avia disk, it has test tones for you that you can mess around with.
