As you know from past threads, I spent a lot of time understanding acoustic panels, placement, etc. I used the old fashion method of sliding a small mirror along the wall/ceilings while my son sat in the primary position.

Once he saw the reflection of the tweeters/midranges in the mirror, we marked all those locations with a small sticker. Later I went back and hung my DIY panels designed from OC703, in those locations.

Wow, if I only knew about a free program that is now available free on AVSforum from member "jeffreylebowski" who is the developer/designer.

Here is the thread discussing this program, "First Reflection Points" and current version 1.02. It was written in C++ and requires Directx 9.0c which should come with XP SP2.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=822273&page=1

I also received an error the first time I ran the program saying I was missing the file d3dx9_32.dll, however, this was only because I needed to get an update for DirectX 9.0C which is also discussed in this thread above. Here is the link for this update if you have problems running the program. It will only give you the updates you need.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai...;displaylang=en

The program is really easy to use and VERY accurate. You basically enter in information about your LCR speakers, seating locations and ear positions, and room dimensions. Then it will calculate like 100,000+ points on your room walls/ceiling/floor and has a 1ft scale so you know where to place your panels.

I compared it to my manual results and it was dead on accurate. Thanks so much to Jeffrey, for designing this program and offering it free. He obviously is a very talented developer.

Below are some pics from my results. The COOLest part of this program is that you can virtually move around the room left/right/up/down/spin/etc.. and can look at the room from any angle or height. Heck, you can even look at it from outside the room from any wall.

Notice in the last picture, I walked behind my left m80.

Randy, thought you might also be interested in this Audioholics article by Jeff Szymanski(lots of bright guys with that ski on the end)following some of the early reflection work by Drs. Toole and Ando and Dave Moulton.

Randy - great stuff. I did some quiick calculations and based on my age, unfortunately, it doesn't appear as though I have the time to hang 100,000 acoustic panels. DAMMIT!!!

Randy,

Thanks very much for this. As you know, I have a lot of work to do on my room dampening and I hope this will help.

looks good
although it is free, he has a paypal setup for donations, I think it only fair to donate a couple bucks for his time it does and will save an hour of our time.
Maybe he will create bigger and better next time

I agree, Troy. I am always delighted to find a freeware program that effectively does what it says it will do. If donations are suggested, I usually contribute.

In a standard sized room (let's call that er..mmm...14'x20' ?,) 12 DIY acoustical panels (bass traps) would go along way to creating a reflection-free and bass managed critical listening area. I can present a detailed explanation if anyone's interested, however ANYTHING written by Jeff Szymanski would suffice as proper and useful education. For those who may not know it, Jeff (Savant/ online name) was the head engineer at Auralex for a number of years and is a frequent contributor to another great acoustics forum: http://forum.studiotips.com

Great info there and frequented by oodles of acoustics pros.

Cheers, and thanks for a great forum here at Axiom.

Welcome Joel,

It has been some time since I treated my room, however, feedback I received from people like you, Ethan (RealTraps), and the owners of GIK, gave me the need for DIY.

Here is an old pic before I upgraded my speakers to Axiom's top of the line.

Randy,

Thank you for your very kind welcome. I hope I can offer information and assistance to folks here, and can be generally useful to this fine forum.

Your HT looks fantastic, and I'll bet it sounds terrific! Nice work indeed, (envious)

Now, if I could only get an invite......

Does this program allow toe-in modelling for the fronts? For those of us that toe in the fronts, I think we only need to worry about floor and ceiling reflections.

The off-axis response still needs to be considered.

I believe this question is covered if you read the thread I mentioned on AVSforum by the creator of the application...

Yes, you're right. I don't have to worry about early reflections from my side walls as they are far enough away from my listening position (for stereo listening). I suppose not everyone is as fortunate as me.
