Hello,

My sub finally arrived. Mojo, you asked me to keep you posted on how I like the QS8s. Well, they sound a lot better now that I set all speakers to small, crossover to 80 and got the sub going.

I played the first 10 minutes of the "Cars" movie again, and there is no comparison. I love the sound. I barely had the sub turned up, but it was impressive. Thanks, Rick.

What puzzled me was trying to calibrate the sub. I fed it test tones from Ovation HT Tune-Up DVD (poor man's AVIA) and from the processor's built-in test tones, out of the sub. I hear nothing and almost nothing even with it turned up almost all the way. It is my understanding that all speakers should measure the same on the SPL meter.

I know the sub works well, because I heard it AND felt it during the first few minutes of "Cars." I had crossover on the sub set to "OUT." Tried the phase at 0 and 180.

On the LMC-1 I don't have an option to turn sub on or to "yes."

Thanks a lot,
Rodney

Do you hear the test tones when you increase the gain for your sub output on your amp? Maybe the test tones are recorded at a low volume and your sub can't pick them up.

Mojo,

I will do a lot more listening to the QS8s and let you know. One think I meant to mention is I haven't gotten them to totally "dissapear" yet, even though I am supposed to be able to.

I have them up on "custom" stands (read 2x4s) until I decide on positioning. Then I will mount to wall.

Regards,
Rodney

Hi Rodney,

I appreciate your feedback on the QS8s but I think you misunderstood my previous post.

You were wondering why you can't hear test tones out of your sub. I suggested that you increase the gain (volume) on your amp's sub output. It could be that the signal going to the sub is so small that the sub can't pick it up.

Not being familiar with the Emotiva equipment I couldn't hazard to guess why the sub is not outputting for the test tones, it should be. You should try and give them a call to see what's going on.

Most people, from what I have read and from my own experience, set the Hsu subs gain in the 9 to 10 o'clock position and fine tune it from there. I'm glad you are enjoying the sub, it is a nice one.

Thanks, Mojo. No, I had not misunderstood. I had already tried both the volume on the back of the sub and the sub adjustment from within the LMC-1 processor. I was simply updating you on my latest experience with the QS8s.

The LMC-1 is quirky. Cycling through input modes fixed a problem earlier on which I had another post, and now after cycling through input modes, inputs, powering off and back on, my sub is getting the tones from both the LMC-1 test tones and the ones from the Ovation DVD.

At the same LMC-1 volume setting of 50, the sub is so much louder when using the LMC-1 built-in test tones than when using the DD 5.1 test tones from the Ovation HT Tune-Up DVD (HD-A1 bitstream output to the LMC-1 through coax digital). I couldn't believe it. So I guess it's the DVD test tones I should use to calibrate.

Regards,
Rodney
