The Best Axiom Tower Value?

I'm not sure how to word the question. The 80s should obviously be the best speaker, but which speaker represents the best price/performance ratio? The one that makes you say it's a clear winner over the one below it and also quite competitive with the model above it. Is it the 60 because of the midrange driver's inclusion? The 50 because of the added bass and dynamics edge it has over the 40? Or does the 40 just because it's the cheapest?

That is a good question!
I have not heard the 80's, but have heard the 40,50 and 60. While I thought them all capable, I wondered about the 80.

So if the money is a little tight and you're looking at the 50, is the 60 enough better that you encourage the person to really work on scraping up the extra cash? Or do you say," nah, take the money and put it into the source"? (Having read a lot of your posts, I wanna see this response!)

I spot a setup!! ;)
You are correct that I favour the source. However, I can not tell you what your budget will allow, you now that stark reality better than I.

Honestly, I liked the speakers (50 & 60) and because of the demonstration quality, would be pressed to choose. I originally heard the 40-50, and then went back for the 50-60. I would guess the 60 would be better, based on the design and price. But as I have always said, price can allow products to be better, but does not guarantee it will.

As for the source, I would have to say that it depends on the source you are using now. Do YOU think it is good? If so, then buy the speakers. If not, then upgrade the source.

How is that for a good no answer, answer?!?

BBIBH

Thought you might like that!!!

It's a gift! ;)

Anyway, my advice is logical. I auditioned the line at a dealer that did not seem interested in spending time with me, or showing me how good the Axioms could sound. This should not be tolerated at ANY store. Prove to me I should spend the money, set up what would representative of the system I should use, build a better system I can compare to...all things good dealers will do. I have been pestering my dealer friends to drop a pair of Axiom 60-80 off so I can put them through their paces in MY listening rooms and various systems. I must say, I am eager to hear the 80's!

As for your decision, base it on your budget, needs and wants. My methods may not be entirely popular, but they do produce good systems. Reach as high as you can, even if it means delaying a purchase. You will be much happier in the long run by not getting what we in the enterprise computing world term " a forklift upgrade" - or buying it all now, but having to sacrifce some elements to make the package fit the budget. It would be far better to take the money, focus on one piece, buy the best quality piece you can get (after listening) and start looking and saving for the next. I will leave the choices of pieces up to you.

BBIBH
