Ahoj!

Quick question for the audio gurus.

I'm currently putting together a monoprice order and am unsure regarding what cables I should use for DVD-A / SACD 5.1 connection (Oppo DV-970HD & HK AVR135).

I could get 3 pairs of standard 22AWG RCA cables:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/produc...at=2&style=
-or-
2 pairs of 18AWG (75Ohm) Component cables:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/produc...at=2&style=

Can one use Component cables for such an application? Are there any advantages? Is there a particular requirement for 5.1 analog?

Thanks again for your help.

Regards,

Jordan

I used a composite set and a component set for a total of 6 individual coax cables with RCA connectors. Seems to work just fine. It's all RG59 from monoprice.

I am using those exact cables (3 pairs stereo) for my SACD player. No complaints.

I doubt there would be any sonic difference if you used 2 pairs of component cables instead, but I don't actually know. As you say, they're the same cables with different colored connectors.

What I do know is that it's cheaper to use 3 pairs of 2-channel audio and that using Component video cables will leave you with 'non-standard' colored connections. Instead of Red/White or Red/Black, you're going to have Red/Green/Blue to Red/White pairs. I am OCD enough about cables that it would drive me nuts.

Oh, FYI: Watch that link. The component cables you are linked to are actually *FIVE* cable sets. R/G/B for video and then R/W for audio, all bundled together. Scroll down on the page. I think what you're looking for is this.

Jordan, go with three pairs of your first link. There's no good reason to get the more expensive and thicker(harder to handle)18ga cables.

Good morning,

You're absolutely right Peter. I linked to the wrong product. I was referring to the one that you linked to; however, as you, John and Kcarlile indicate, I may as well stick with the standard red-white RCA cable.

I'm really quite impressed with the cables from Monoprice. Not only are they reasonably priced but they look quite nice as well.

It's too bad that there are not very many DVD-A or SACD disks out there that interest me. I think that my collection will be rounded out after I get the Amon Tobin, Crystal Method and Bjork disks.

I’m actually really stoked though because I have the green light to purchase a bit more gear for our apartment when I move to Ottawa to start an exciting career as a public servant. Do we have many forum members living in the National Capital Region? I wouldn’t mind auditioning some QS4s or QS8s in the not so distant future.

Anyhow, this post is beginning to meander so I’ll cut it off there.

Thanks again for your replies.

Interesting--we seem to have rather different tastes in music, but I feel the same way about SACD/DVD-A. Either I'm not interested, or I have it on CD already.

As far as I can tell, I don't share the same taste in music as anyone on this forum. I'm still waiting for my very first positive mention on the "what are you listening to tonight" thread. I haven't lost hope yet.

Those RCA cables in the first link...I cannot tell if they are bound together or not? Anyone know? If they are bound together, I would like to pull them apart for more flexibility.

I think that they are bound together. Not sure how easy they would be to separate.

Cheers,

Okay, Jordan, I spent the morning listening to some samples of the music you've suggested. I don't want you to feel left out.

Emily Haines--really liked her stuff. Reading into her bio I see she's a member of Broken Social Scene, who's "You Forgot it in People" I own. This was recommended to me by Scott (Sidvicious02). I've added her CD to my list.

Trentemoller--Although I am not a huge fan of techno, this is a bit mellow and atmospheric--which I like. The frantic pounding beats I can't handle. I can see myself enjoying this album.

Thom Yorke--This one's easy. I'm a huge Radiohead fan. Good choice. 'Nuff said.

Miles Davis--Another no brainer. Jazz is hit and miss for me, but "Kind of Blue" is an album everyone should have.

SNFU--Hmm, not for me.

Venetian Snares--Experimental and edgy. Made me nervous. I don't think I could make it through an entire CD.

Ellen Allien--More techno/experimental music. Again, not my taste as a genre, but her music is good. She seems to run her voice through all kinds of digital processors--keeps things interesting.

All in all, a pretty interesting mix. Everyone's tastes are different, so don't feel bad if no one seems to connect. So, please, keep throwing new things out there. I'm not adverse to trying something different.

For my own sanity, I emailed tech support and they said the piece that connects the two cables can be removed. Yeah! Looks like I'll be ordering some after all.

St_PatGuy,

You truly made my day. I am so very impressed that you took the time not only to look up my past music suggestions but also to have a listen to them. Very impressive.

I certainly don't expect everyone to enjoy all of my selections but am glad some some people like some of them some of the time.

Agreed. Venetian Snares can be a tough listen. I think of his work as the musical embodyment of chaos and complexity theory - somehow, there is order amongst what seems to be randomness. His "Rossz Csillag Allat Született" album, where he presumably is trying to get back to his Hungarian roots, is an easier listen.

Since I am on the topic of hometown (being Winnipeg) musicians, I will also suggest Greg MacPherson who offers some really great straight-forward rock music. Since today is May Day, I would suggest Greg's "The Company Store" in particular.

Emily Haines is also in Metric. Busy girl she is.

Cheers and thanks for your feedback.

Jordan

No prob.

Next time, it'll cost you $5.00 per minute. Paypal is preferred.

Okay, I'm kidding.

It's really $7.50 per minute.

That seems like a lot of money...Is there any sex talk included in this price?

So submarines aren't the only things that are long, hard, and full of seamen?
