Well... Sounds like you do need to recalibrate then. LOL

You mostlikely know this ...when you set you receiver to big the full frequency gets sent to the mains. Whatever setting you have on your sub will play at its own crossover point. So if you set your man to large and your speaker rolls off at 27Hz and you have your sub set to roll off at 80 hz. You would have both your sub and mains playing the same frequency between 80-27 Hz. Gving a nice full sound. If you had it all that time and switched to small you receiver would send all the frequencies below 80hz (thats if you set it at that) to the sub exclusively. It would definitely sound less fuller because your sub will be playing all frequencies below 80 and your mains will not. (not considering the roll-off of the mains) It is a preference between every individual. Some set it to large some set it to small. Definitely setting it to large for HT gives a nice ummmppphhhhh!!!!

Mark, as Sat indicated, if all you did was switch to "small" without any other change, the overall bass level would be decreased because the M60s would be doing less in the low bass. So, some re-calibration to increase the EP350's output was in order, but be careful about the "fullness" factor. The sound shouldn't be any more "full" than what's on the recording, so the sub shouldn't be turned up so high that it's heard as a separate source. Of course, as always, it's your money, so adjust things as you like.

Enjoy the music, not the equipment.

I like the uummpphh (sp?). And I definitely like my music to come from the mains rather than the sub so large setting is more convenient.
Small settings, with the sub at 12 o'clock, provided louder sound but it did seem less integrated.
I keep switching back and forth. For Monsoon Wedding, a very nice Indian movie with surprisingly good sound effects, I had to switch the mains to small to understand the dialogue. Same with Gosford Park.

there is a little confusion I have about how the bass filter in the reciever works. In Saturn and JohnK 's comments above, it seems that even when fronts are set to Large, the subwoofer filter will STILL send the <80Hz content meant for the fronts channels to the Subwoofer as well. Is this the case ?

I would think that the receiver would ONLY send the <80 Hz content that is meant for the OTHER channels/speakers (marked as Small) to the Sub and NOT send any <80 content meant for the Fronts (which are marked as Large). Wouldn't sending the <80 content to both the large Fronts and the Sub potentially result in phasing issues between the 80-27 Hz fronts channel output coming from the Fronts and that same channel content coming from the Sub as well ?

audioseeker,

It depends on the receiver, but many receivers allow you to select either YES or PLUS subwoofer modes (these names differ from brand to brand). In YES mode, the sub receives the LFE channel plus the low-pass signals taken only from the channels that are set to SMALL. The sub does not receive any signal from the channels that are set to LARGE.

In contrast, in PLUS mode, the sub will play the LFE in addition to low-pass signals from all channels, regardless of whether they are set to SMALL or LARGE. You are correct that the PLUS mode can cause a phase-related problem (comb filtering) between the identical bass sound coming simultaneously from the LARGE front channels and the sub.

In the end, the best way is to experiment with all of these configurations, and pick the setting that sounds best. But the subwoofer set to YES at 80Hz, with all main channels set to SMALL, would be a good starting point (in fact, this is the setup recommended by THX).

I'm 49, have 3 boys--20, 19, and 16 and I've just discovered the wonder that is axiom audio. I can't believe I actually listened to Technics for 20 years. When my wife was pregnant I found her to be more attractive. She had a certain glow, a certain smile, even a swagger I found appealing.
