I'd have to say, my purchase of the original Avia disk was huge in terms of helping me adjust my TV properly. Also, it was very beneficial in explaining what all the different settings do, and how setting them wrong could be harmful to the display. I hope this new disk is equally excellent in helping understand the ins and outs of HD technology.

Randy, let us know what you think.

I'm hoping it will help provide a better picture of my 720p projector as well as with audio/sub setup.

for those of you that have used the original Avia setup DVD, I've got a question.

With the DVD's your able to adjust your picture for optimal performance. As you know most DVD players AND TV's have contrast, brightness, etc... settings. Which are you to adjust when using Avia, the TV or the DVD player?

In my situation I'm using a HTPC DVD software that also has adjustment settings for the NVIDIA card and my Sanyo projector has settings. So are you supposed to just adjust the TV or projector, or the source as well?

I personally would adjust the display, most sources dont actually have these sort of adjustments, Perhaps a few more modern models but whats originally intended is that you adjust the display. Also keep in mind that once you have your settings for a calibrated display, If your tv allows for different settings for differnt inputs you can set them all to the correct settings. While sources will differ on what display settings will be correct for calibration, at least you'll be in the ballpark.

That's actually news to me. Is this the case only with HDMI-capable players?

Yes, adjust the settings at the display overall. If you have 2 sources that are way out agreement, then make additional settings on the source if needed. It just depends on your setup and the number of video sources you need to accomodate.

My HDMI Panasonic S97S upconverting DVD player has many settings, just like a TV, as does my DVD player software TheaterTek that I use for my HTPC. The Nvidia card 6600GT has many settings also. It is just confusing as everything in the chain affects the picture.

My findings with other calibration DVD's, THX on movie DVDs, etc. is that I don't see much difference when adjusting contrast and sharpness when using my projector. Hopefully it will be different with this new DVD.

I hear you. Calibrate the display and only adjust the sources if absolutely necessary. I agree you want to keep things as simple as you can so it will be less confusing and fewer changes to the image signal should be better for your final picture.

Let us know how you like the new Avia DVD.

I would keep the source settings to their default and modify the settings on the pj. I'm thinking about getting AVIA2 or the new DVE HD/Bluray whenever I jump to that new format (keep dreaming buddy... ) so let us know how this new AVIA does!!

I was just listening to a podcast on avrant.com and they were debating how to pronounce this disc. I've always thought it was ehvia, possibly because I'm Canadian, eh? They settled on ahvia. What do you say?

ditto Ayvia. This way must be the correct way since you can't say Ayvia without saying A V.

At least, that's my take on it.

I think the word has latin roots, meaning mother or family related ... too busy at work to google it \
If so, it should be pronounced something like AhVIhAh

EDIT: --like in "Avi-ation" --- nevermind Aviation is pronounced in the USA more like ehviation... so confusing

Speaking of from the latin . . . I was in Italy last month visiting a friend and Bocce ball came up. "It's not Bawchi, it's bo-chayyyy" her husband corrected me, and "Do all Canadians say Eye-Key-Ah? It's E-Kay-Ah!" My friend is in fact Swedish, and confirmed it's a North American phenomenon to say those words the way I do. Now, of course, I have to keep saying E-Kay-Ah everytime I pass that blue-and-yellow store!! Reminds me of the old Canadian Kids in the Hall skit where they practiced saying weird words like "Mukluk" and "Bulbous Bouffant".

Holy Hacks! I'm a hijacker! Sorry Randy!

There's always crepes. I was taught in French class they were pronounced crehps, not crayps, which seems to be the Americanized way. I still confuse people in crepe shops by asking for crehps...

We just got an IKEA for the first time here in Utah. It just opened Wednesday May 23. Haven't been yet, but I have been to several in California, and one in Maryland. Great store.

Amie, I guess your friend is indeed correct about North Americans, in that to me it will always be 'eye-key-uh'. I think everyone here refers to it that way.

We added ice-bocce ball to our list of weird March sports this year. Very hard to see the white ball for this game!!

What the hell is that? You can tell I'm not from Canada, I've never heard of ice-bocce ball. lol

Sounds like some fancy type of snow cone or something.

It's just like regular bocce ball, except you play in parkas with snowmobile boots and sunblock . . . it's a wonder it hasn't caught on more places. March up here is amazing - you can sit in a Muskoka chair (adirondack is the translation, I understand) in jeans and a tee shirt and have your frosty beverage in the snowbank beside you. We have three or four days like that most Marches, and we try to think of fun outdoor sports to accompany the inevitable barbecue gathering. Ice golf also had a little white ball problem . . .

Hehe, now ice golf I'd love to try, being a big golfer myself. I'd cheat though and use orange or yellow balls, or any other color other then white.

I think with pronouncing words like Ikea and Bocci ball, we tend to just pronounce them as we see it since most of us are not fluent in either language. We tend to hack words to their simpliest form. I'm sure there are a whole host of other words we desecrate!

I'm in the A-V-camp.

In our language, our vowels are pronounced EH (as in bay); EE (as in me); eye; oh; you. In just about every other language they are pronounced: letter A is AH (as in wad); letter E is EH (as in bay); letter I is EE (as in keep); oh; and UE (as in sue).

That's why IKEA is EE-kEH-AH, rather than EYE-kEE-UH.
That's why Antonio Bandaras pronounces congestion as cOHn-jEHs-tEE-OHn, rather than cuhn-jest-shun.
That's why Mitsubishi is mEEt-sUE-bEEsh-EE
That's why Daimler is dAHEEm-ler (the AH and EE form the diphthong "eye"), and not Dame-ler.

Oh sure, you COULD break it down and make it all intelligible.

And the companies play right along with cultural differences (as well they should, I suppose). The Ikea TV commercials have spokesman "Ingmar" saying the store name with the American inflection. He doesn't sound comfortable, though.

I always thought it was funny that Americans drive "Mahzduhs" while Canadians drive "Mazzduhs".

Do most of the video test patterns supplied on the new Avia disc have an explanation of what the pattern should ideally look like and what setting to adjustment on the display (in my case a projector) to get it there? My one quibble with the original disc is that an explanation was only provided for a handful of the many test patterns on the disc and I had no idea what to adjust or look for with the rest of them.

I had emailed Ovation directly about 2 weeks ago and had asked about the new discs. At that time, they said they were a little while away from finishing but would let me know when they were available. I'd guess they'd have for sale before any resellers, if i hear anything first i'll let everyone know.

I just emailed HDTV again and asked why they would advertise a mid-may release and say they are the only vendor offering this first. They are now saying Aug-September. They said it is not their fault the mfg keeps sliding the date.

I told them it seemed like a shady sales tactic to get money up front, what a joke.

I had entered my name on Ovation's website for automatic notification once the AVIA II disc became available. I finally received that notification today and noticed one interesting tidbit on the website that anyone state-side can take advantage of:

Not yet, though i recall seeing "late 2007" as an expected release date for HD-DVD and BluRay versions of AVIA II.

I like the S&V disc i have now. Covers off all the major bases that i need, but this is great that a new version is out covering the newer formats.

Yep, I received mine and it seems to be pretty cool, I've got the NTSC version as I currently don't own HD-DVD. I use it with my HTPC and TheaterTek DVD software. I've noticed during some of the chapters that it cuts out before the hosts are done talking and some of the chapters seem to freeze at times.

I will have to try with my regular DVD player to see if there is playability issues.
