I friend of mine liked my Axiom speakers so much he is deciding to buy a set. Although he is rubbing it in that he is going with the EP600 and I'm still using the EP350.

I told him that he needs to get a new receiver and it needs to be a Denon or HK or just get a seperate amp. He wants to get a Denon.

So my question is, will any of the Denon AV receiver adequately power the M80's. Are there any Denon models to avoid? He was eyeing the Denon AVR1707 that Best Buy had in its Sunday advertisement.

Does the AVR1707 have independent crossover settings for the different speaker groups or is it the same crossover for all speakers?

Doesn't look like it's got independent crossovers. I don't know of many receivers that do, outside of H/K. That one should work with the M80s (I think), but he won't be able to push it extremely far.

This may help you.

No independent cross-overs that I am aware of.

FWIW...

I believe that my Denon 1804 is (roughly) a comparable ancestor of the 1707. I have M60's.

I like (and use) the Zone2. The amp is reasonably capable (louder than I really need it to be, even in a big room).

BUT there is no way I would advise anybody to buy a receiver without pre-amp outputs. The upgrade path is just too painful. Oh sure, you THINK you'll never want to upgrade.

I would stretch the budget and get a 2807 or 3806 instead; not only are the outputs more flexible and the amplification more robust, but also you get the Audssey Multi EQ. Refurbs at Dakmart for about $800. Maybe Ecost.

I'm running an 1804 as well. I see not much difference from the 1700 series up to, not including, the 2300 series, except price. As Tom said the 1804 does a really good job, I use my zone 2 as rear center for a 6.1 set up. If the 1707 is all he can afford then go for it, as long as it has all the bells and whistles he is looking for.

I'm using a Denon 1905 and M80's with no problems at all.
The 1905 has one xover setting for all speakers.

The 1707 woud be fine. One thing to keep in mind is if your friend wants to tie his system together and bring the settings menu for the receiver up on his TV (which is a capability that I highly recommend), he will need to move up to the 1907 or higher, the 1707 won't do it.

Awright, awright - be gentle with me!

So I have played a little golf this summer..... Ok ALOT of golf. I have also been crazy busy at work and will have something to share with you in a few weeks.

I check in every couple of days just to be sure you guys aren't picking on Jack. Let me return this thread to it's proper owner so he can decide on his Denon receiver.
