Has nyone here used an AV receiver with the Audyssey Multi EQ system built in and noticed a "real" difference with their HT using Axiom speakers?

I have been reading up on this technology and it certainly looks good.

I'd certainly line up for a before and after demo. If it does what it says without affecting the overall tonal balance of the speakers, then it should be a great solution.

I think my hero, HomeDad, may have this on his Denon. Maybe he can tell us about it.

Lol, in answer to the question I've been very satisfied with the results of the Audyssey, it managed to really balance out my room and make watching movies and listening to music more enjoyable in any seating position in the room. With my old Denon setup if you weren't sitting in the sweet spot you would be missing much of the stuff that makes these speakers and surround sound so fun.
I believe mdrew has also had very good results with the Audyssey EQ.

I liked it very much for the first two months. Definitely made the sound field seem more enveloping. However, it suddenly started setting things all wonky. The worst part of this was that it clobbered the human vocal range, setting most of the speakers to -2 to -7dB or more. The net result was to make the center channel sound hollow and tinny.

Randy has suggested resetting the microprocessor which I wont get to until this weekend. I hope it works as I liked how it seemed to make everything blend together better.

Joe, note that the "EQ2"(available on some less expensive Onkyos, etc.) in your title is a simplified version of the MultEQ. Basically, differences are that it measures two side points in addition to the center and doesn't equalize the sub.

That is correct John, the Denon's appear to incorporate the best version of Audyssey currently with an AVR.

Yes, also Onkyo 705 and up and some Marantz models.

I have had great luck with Audysey. Not such great luck with my receiver, but I sure miss the Audysey EQ when I don’t have it. (I use a Yamaha while waiting for my replacement receiver. (second time now)).

Some folks hate it. I suspect that they have rooms that no amount of calibration will help and they should probably work on room treatments. There are also a few who try it once, don’t like the results and give up. I had to run it a few times before it came back with good results. The first time I ran it, I had the mic too low and the second time my neighbor was mowing his lawn.

I also re-calibrated my speaker levels and distances after the program is done. All these room EQ programs come up with some weird assed numbers. Audysey works with the receiver’s auto set up program, and applies a multi band EQ to each channel. If you run it and just don’t like the way things sound, set your speaker levels and distances the old fashioned way and give it another listen. You can also copy all the EQ numbers onto a manual pre set and tweak at will.

A PM from Mojo reminded me that I never posted the results of resetting the microprocessor on my Denon’s Auto-EQ.

Resetting the microprocessor didn’t seem to have any effect on the Auto-EQ. It still made an EQ curve that set the center and surround speakers to around -6dB to -9dB and the mains to -3dB at the 250 to 500 Hz ranges.

I know that the microprocessor did reset as all the assignments and settings were gone and I had to reset them from scratch.

I’m pretty sure It must be something to do with my room’s acoustics or somehow I damaged the microphone.
