I'm not understanding this...there is nothing coming out of the ex channels during dd ex 5.1 movies. When I look in my reciever while the movie is playing it just says dolby digital. I've tried switching DSP's but it's not letting me choose a decoder. I can't really pinpoint when this problem began occuring, I just know now that for some reason my movies, whether dts or dolby aren't decoding the back channels. This only occurs with movies, on tv and music, I can choose decoders. Why is this? I need help. I know that i've had the option of decoding before, so what is it that I did wrong?

I think I see the answer. Are the movies really both Dolby Digital EX and 5.1? If it's sending the signal as DDEX with only 5.1 channels, that's all you're going to get from that disc. There may be a way to get your reciver to do DD and DPLII+ to get the extra 2 channels, though.

well to give examples, star wars the phantom menace, and the incredibles are two of the movies i've tried using and the back channels dont work. I've seen these movies before with the ex channels working...i dont know whats the problem now. I haven't changed my equipment or changed any cables.

OK, so those are at least 6.1, if not 7.1. Check the menus on the DVDs? Perhaps they're set for 5.1?

Now I have another serious problem with my yammy. I think there is something wrong with my two front inputs. They're not outputting any sound regardless of what I do. My poor m60's are mute! I'm hoping there isn't a hardware problem with this thing. This issue is much more serious than the previous one. I've tried going thru all the options in the yamaha but I'm beginning to think the fronts wire inputs are fried.

Sounds like a reset might be in order. I'm not sure how to do that on that unit.

OK, I hate to do this, but I just did it myself the other day. Check your A&B speaker buttons inside the front panel.

Those would be the buttons that turn on and off the front (A) speakers and the 2nd room (B) speakers.

Does that count?

Turn it off, walk away for about an hour, then come back and double check that all the speakers are turned on in the menu. Also check that you didn't dislodge a connection.

My way's not very sportsman-like.

I think I got to the bottom of this decoding business...on my denon setup menu, when I select HDMI audio output Multi(LPCM) instead of Multi(Normal) my yamaha reciever seems to bypass all the decoders except the basic dolby digital or dts. But the thing is, is that it sounds much better in this way! But I am in no way able to get more than 5.1 channels from any source I throw in there. If I select Multi(normal) it doesn't sound as good but it allows me to decode it in any number of ways which doesn't seem to make a difference except giving me 7.1. Isn't there a way I can get the cake an eat it too?

Also, I've purchased a PS3 and have been watching a number of blu ray discs, including the descent, pirates of the carribean etc. But there doesn't seem to be any decode of any kind going on in the reciever. Is that how uncompressed PCM is suppose to show up? And one last important problem, The Descents audio specs are uncompressed pcm 6.1 but im again only getting 5.1 channels. Shouldn't I be getting a full 7.1 from that?

Please some advice, I know my list of problems is long and confusing but i greatly wish to get to the bottom of all this.

PS -- How do all of you watch movies? Do you use the DSP's at all? How do you recommend watching movies?

Drew, I don't use HDMI as you do, and it's unclear why it doesn't sound as good to you when you can you can apply DPLIIx(my preference)to expand the sound to 7.1. Possibly someone who uses a receiver similar to yours with HDMI can add some thoughts.
