Whatever happened to sidepipes?

They were just cool and deserve a comeback!

What else?

That's a heck of a gorgeous '72 427, my ex brother-in-law had one darn near exactly like (factory rims) it back in the early eighties...the thing was FAST, blew my '75 350ci Corvette off the road like it was standing still.

Just a couple of days ago I was doing some closet cleaning and came across a couple of these ... asked my 21 year old son if he ever used 'em. "Naw, what are they?"

I think too many people burned their shins and ankles. It's kinda like the whole capes are a bad idea for superheroes thing.

Rockin my peers and puttin suckas in fear
Makin the tears rain down like a MON-soon
Listen to the bass go BOOM
Explosion, overpowerin
Over the competition, I'm towerin
Wreckin shop, when I drop these lyrics that'll make you call the cops
Don't you dare stare, you betta move
Don't ever compare
Me to the rest that'll all get sliced and diced
Competition's payin the price

I'm gonna knock you out (HUUUH!!!).......
Ooooooooooooh... i thought this was a LL Cool J tribute thread sorry.

I like side pipes, but only if done tastefully. Performance wise, they suck. It’s pretty tough to maintain velocity for exhaust scavenging with them.

I put together this small block for a friend of mine a few years ago and was having trouble running pipes out the back big enough to support the engine power (620 hp / 580 trq) and not get hung up on the IRS. We decided to try the Hooker Super Comp side mount headers.

I think they look pretty good on the car. Women hate this car though. It sounds just like a race car, and the pipes do get hot. Especially after a little smoke show. Plus it beats you to death with all the suspension mods on it. Pretty fun to drive though.

awesome mike, is it for sale? I wish I had enough talent to rebuild engines like that. I looked at a Camaro 68 327 SS the other day, but after close examination it looked like they just threw some paint over the top of rust. Not worth the 21,000 they were asking. Besides it had a 350 thrown in it.

I'll probably break forum rules on this, but if any of you have a 67-69 Camaro for sale, let me know.

I always really did like the styling of those cars. They are definetly one of the best looking cars ever designed IMO.

It is to the car world what the SR-71 is to the jet world.

Did somebody say blackbird? Just went to the Udvar-Hazy Air & Space Museum next to Dulles Airport last weekend. My brother took a few pictures.

I’m looking for a straight pre 70 myself Randy. I've always wanted one after watching Better Off Dead ("I want my two dollars!!"). I don’t even want the drive train, just a rolling chassis with all the panels. I plan to put the new LS7 crate engine in it (slightly modified of course)…

I spent a few years building race engines professionally. Couldn’t make any money at it, so now I just do it on the side for friends. The 406 above was quite a challenge. Probably the most challenging build I’ve done including some pretty wild 700+ cid pro-mods and aluminum 410 sprints. He wanted 500+ hp, had to be a small block, had to run on 90 octane pump gas, and had to have street manors. He also wanted it to be nitrous and fuel injection adaptable. I had to work with Dave Crower personally to model the camshaft profile. We went through two cams, two different intakes and two different carbs with it on the dyno before getting it right. It’s ready for a 400 hp shot, but the owner had a change in heart after realizing what 600 hp in a shark does. He can’t get it to hook up as is, so a burst would be worthless… It’s so friggin loud you never know when the tires are spinning by sound. You have to drive (when playing) by watching the tach and feel… when you can lift your head off the seat and see the rpm’s rev, you know you’re spinning. If it’s hooked up, your head doesn’t come off the seat till you get your foot out of. There is no powering through corners… you get speed up before going in and power when you’re out. Hit it in the middle and you’re looking the wrong direction real quick…
