Axiom Home Page Forums General Discussion Home Theater M80's might have gotten wet in a storm!

About a month ago, my basement got flooded and I think some water went in the hole in the bottom of my Axiom M80.I still have not connected them yet since Im doing renovations to the basement. Today I noticed when I looked at the hole in the bottom, I see some white padding type of maeterial. It is both on the bottom front and back holes. My question is ...is that normal? The passing material is not comming out or anything but I see it. If I put my finder in, I can touch it. Im just wodering if this material expanded if water went in the speaker? Im assuming that the hole is an air duct and should be free of anything. Can anyone tell me if my speakers are messed up? Thanks

The white batting material is placed in the speakers by axiom during the manufacturing process and is normal. Are you saying this material looks damaged by the water? It is normal to look, inside and see the batting.

If you have concerns I would call axiom. If the water was high enough to get to the speaker drivers or wire terminals inside, you may have issues.

Well, I just never noticed it before and I thought that white was caused by the water. The ultimate test will be when I connect it. But seeing that the white material is normal on those holes is some sort of relief.

The white batting is used in all speakers for acoustic reasons within the speaker cabinet.

Which port did the water get in, the front one or the back one? I would be more concerned about the electronics within the speakers where the speaker wires connect if the water came in the back rear port.

To bad you didn't get down to save your speakers in time.

I believe the water went up 2-3 inches. In that case, the electronics must have gotten wet. However, My pc also got water inside. But it still worked. Im hopping for the same thing for the speakers

As long as they weren't on, and they've had sufficient time to dry, they should be ok, electronics-wise.

did you turn them on side and dump the water out.

No...I did not try to see if water was in there. However, when I moved it like 5 days later...nothing came out.

If water did indeed get in them I would think you could tell immediatly because the finish would be bubbled up and coming off and the wood at the bottom would be kinda messed up. Its MDF afterall, for those who dont know what happens when that stuff gets wet.. its not good.

The crossover should be fine. Electronic parts are pretty resiliant. I have washed circuit boards under running water before. Theres just a few components you cant get wet and although getting the coils inside wet, especilly the iron core (rust) isint the best thing, it should be fine.
