I am heading out to visit my son in Calgary for the Thanksgiving long weekend and want to take him and his girlfriend out for dinner. We all love Thai and Indian food but are willing to consider anything recommended. My son is pretty new to Calgary so I thought maybe some of you Calgary residents would have suggestions.

Thanks,

heh, with Calgary, you REALLY should be specifying how much per main course you are willing to spend I could recommend alot of nice restaurants, but they range from 40-50 dollars for a main course...

Hey Hutzal,

$30-50 for the main course would be fine with me. I do not see my son too often (being 3400 km away) so I don't mind spending the $$$. We were through Calgary on a motorcycle trip this past summer but I only had 1 day to spend with my son and that was at the Stampede. So let me know what you suggest!!

If I was to be in town I would suggest my place!

As I will be out of town, what area of town will you be in?

There is Smuggler's Inn, Ceasar's(Macleod Trail south), Hy's Steak House oe Ceaser's(downtown), or The Reef & Beef (N.E) for great steaks or prime rib.

There is a great new Italian restaurant up here in the north end, The Green Olive. They make all the pasta on site.

The Taj Mahal Restaurant on Macleod trail should work if in the south end.

I highly recommend:

Khublai Mongolian Szechuan Cuisine
349, 10 Ave. SW
403-232-8800

You can choose from the menu, or go to the buffet and choose your own ingredients for your meal. They weigh it and cook it up, so you can eat as much or as little as you'd like. They've all types of meats, veggies and sauces to choose from.

Good recomendation.

I also recommend Open Sesame, a Mongolian type grill as well. Same deal as Khublai, but not in the core of downtown. Its more south on McLeod Trail.

Andrea,
I'm currently sitting in the Air Canada lounge in Calgary awaiting my flight to Toronto. You do have to be careful in Calgary, as many of the places are ridiculously over-priced. I'm constantly amazed at the amount of money in this city. I've never seen an area (in Canada) with as many Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche, BMW etc. It seems the BWM 3 series is the 'Honda Civic' in this city. That said, I'd recommend Murrieta's on First Street SW. Their wine list, in my opinion, is second to none, and they are very reasonably priced. The atmosphere is great, the staff is friendly and not too pretentious. The Rack-of-Lamb at Murrieta's is the best I have had in my life. There really are dozen's of great places to eat in this city, enjoy your visit, and good luck with the traffic. They are building a 4 square block high-rise downtown, therefore the affected roads are closed to traffic and things get pretty congested.

What giovato didn't tell you is that there's only one BMW service agent in Calgary. Need I say more?

Andrea,

Two great suggestions for Thai food are the "King and I" and "Thai Sa-On".

King and I is the fancier of the two but also the priciest, but the food is fabulous and guaranteed not to disappoint.

The decor of Thai Sa-On is a little simpler but the food is very good and the last time I was there, prices were reasonable. More traditional Thai setting.

Both restaurants are just off the downtown area. Restaurants in Calgary are quite busy these days and reservations are recommended.

Enjoy

Greg
