"THE UGLY KITCHEN"- A photo essay by Terzaghi

OK, so I caught some flac from several of you guys when I posted my axiom setup pics. Many people did not like my floral wallpaper which was a lovely shade of puke green. I thought It would be good to post pics of my weekend project so everyone can get the visions of that horrible paper out of their heads.

Anyway, My girlfriend and I had been living with this wallpaper since August and this weekend I decided "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH". (And my land lord finally decided to pay me for the work).

Here is the picture of how my kitchen used to look:





We have been saying all along that this wallpaper must have been put up when the house was built because it is the ugliest wallpaper we have ever seen... Well I was wrong. Look at what was underneath the green stuff:








I was surprised at how easy the green stuff came off, but I knew this uglier layer was going to be hard to remove. Apparently the previous owners of this house were blind and wanted to torture everyone with vision. Not only was it ugly, but it appeared to be applied with some industrial strength adhesive that would NOT come off. The pics show that I was indeed correct:







So I realized the next best thing to do was prime the wallpaper with oil-base and mud the seams:








And by 10:30pm the next day we have a new kitchen!:












We are going to get some new curtains (The old ones were nice and green as well) and a new kitchen table on Thursday.

Next on the list will be to replace the light fixture and the tile.

Much, much better. You are right the underlying wallpaper was even uglier.

Er... which one is the before and after... ? Kidding! Looks better.

Looks great ... the only thing *I'd* personally change out is the yellowish looking light switch plate for a bright white plate, it would blend so much better with the room. (IMO)

The pictures don't show it, but if you have more than one of these plates I'd replace them all with the white plates ... but then agian, that's just me.

Very nice! Pale yellow is a great color for a kitchen. Thanks for taking the pictures.

So, when are you going to replace that ugly ceiling light?

Rick, I think those wall plates are of the builder beige variety and the switch itself would also need to be changed out for a white one.

I could easily put on a white switch plate, but as jakewash said the actually switches are beige.

The color of the wall is actually antique white, but against the white trim and with the camera lighting it makes it look darker/more yellow than it really is.

The white trim paint (ibis white) and the antique wall paint is what I had on hand, so that is what I used


Since I am renting the house I am not going to remodel everything to my liking. I just want to update a few things while I am here to make my stay more enjoyable. The more my land lord agrees to pay me for fixing things up, the more I am willing to fix

Your work made a big improvement, looks nice. I've always been amazed by the number of ugly wallpaper patterns that have been produced.

looks nice, no doubt, but what are you going to do about that ugly Ohio State plaque on your mantle?

He already replaced it with a much cooler Oklahoma State logo.

I think, perhaps, a Michigan State plaque would look quite nice there.

medic8r is right, the logo is Oklahoma state, not Ohio State.

I'm going to print and laminate that so I can put it in my wallet and show it to my wife from time to time. And certain patients, too.

So much worship, and yet no one's worshipping my DDR hotness yet. I'll have to add a few minutes to my workout time.

My Xbox 360 has recently given me exercise--I think it's a built-in game called "freezing console power button push." It's great. About seven times an hour the machine will inexplicably freeze causing me to get up and hit the power button.

Thank goodness for the product protection plan. Unfortunately, the store seems to be out of Xbox's. This is the second part of the exercise program--toting the heavy box around.

I don't think my exercise regime is as fun as DDR, though.

Oh man - I love that second wallpaper! I got the warmest Holly Hobby vibe from it! You could have Ebayed a whole vintage kitchen to go with it!

Uh - but - I understand that's not for everyone! You must have had very sore arms but the results look great!

LOL! Amie, I used to love Holly Hobby as a kid! I'll bet all the guys here are thinking, "who the heck is Holly Hobby?!"

OK, so I finally hung up some mini blinds/curtains/a picture.

We also got our new ktichen table set up.

Here are the pics of the semi-final product.

We just need to change out the light switches/light fixture/ tile.

That space on the left of the TV is crying out for another EP500 or a second rack on the left side for a PS3/Blu Ray player and a Wii. You can never have too many toys.

That is where my ep500 was originally but I got better results by moving it into the corner.

There is a rack like the one that I have but it has three tiers instead of 4. I was thinking about getting that. Then I could put the cable box and hd-dvd player over there, add a bluray player and put an axiom amp under the denon

I doubt all of that will happen... but I will have two ep500's for a day or two since axiom is sending me a replacement. I plan on experimenting with 2 subs, maybe put the second one up front and then try it behind the loveseat (opposite corner from where the current ep500 is).

If I like the results I may buy another sub. It will be a 350v3 most likely.
