Assuming that I had found the ideal postion to place my woofer, is it normal that I have to turn the volume knob to almost maximum to hear the booming effect? Or should I increase the output level of my receiver? Thanks.

If you walk in the room, does the bass gets louder?

Booming effect... you mean so it sounds like a horrible car subwoofer?

No, it's almost the same.

No I don't need another horrible car subwoofer sound
Maybe the question I should ask is: Where is the volume knob turned to on your subwoofers?

On both of my Hsu subs the gain is set to around 9 to 10 o'clock.

Then this does not sound normal at all. Check all the LFE settings in the receiver (LFE gain for DD, DTS and PCM and then check subwoofer).

UNless this is just a timezone problem and you have to set the gain to a higher clock setting! \:\)

My Sunfire based sub is set to about 30%. There is no AVR compensation.
