Hey now, no hacking on The Corp... we still have one balanced news source in this country.

So the installer guy comes today (after we got bumped up in installation) and now he is saying that he doesn't know if I can get HD (trees blocking sat 129). We have a 2 story house with a tall roof line, and the trees are big, but they are in the back yard and we have a walk-out lot that slopes down away from the house. I would guess that the trees would need to be about 50 feet tall to be the same height as the top of our roof. I don't know how high up the dish needs to point, but I am sure that it isn't straight at the horizon. He wants to put the dish on to a tripod mounted to our roof, but my wife things that it will look stupid. He couldn't go up and check it out because there is snow and ice on that part of the roof. We are going to be "rescheduled" however, if he is waiting for that to melt, it could be a while. He said that Dish will still honor the $100 rebate deal that I am supposed to get, but we'll see about that I guess.

Stupid trees!

Nick, the DTV HD Satellites are much lower in the sky than the SD ones. Our dish - which was already on the roof - had to be repositioned also. It ended up on the chimney (which is a framed-around-a-pipe thing, not a brick thing). We decided not to care if it looks stupid. You can't really see it from the street anyway since it's on the back side of the chimney. Plus, I'm always spoiling for a fight with the Homeowners' Association.

There's a guy on DBS Talk who has a methodology for getting around problematic trees by using multiple dishes. Not a "standard install" for sure, though.

I joined their forums today, but didn't find these "non-standard installs" that you talk about...

Nick, it's DTV-specific, but the same principle probably applies to Dish, too. link for using multiple dishes to get around obstacles to HD. Again, this might not help your exact circumstance, but I thought it was ingenious.
