Hi all, I am a new to this forum but I've been reading very helpful information from you guys so far and I decided to buy these speakers based on the many positive reviews from many of you. Anyway, today I ordered a pair of M80's, a VP 150 and a pair of QS8's. The problem that i am facing now is that I will be setting these speakers with an ONKYO receiver - the model is a TX-DS787- 100/ch. It is kind of old, but I am trying to save an extra $1000 for a new receiver. The question to you guys is - Do you think this receiver will run the M80's? if so, would it run too hot or even shot down, or even worse, could it damage the speakers or set on fire? Anybody running Onkyos or any sort of experience on similar set-ups will be nice.

Thanks,
playitloud

It should do fine, at worst it will overheat and shut down if it gets worked too hard, ie. playing it too loud.

How big is your room and how loud to you like to listen?

You may find this interesting.

I wouldn't get too worried though because, like Sean said, it does depend on how loud you like to listen. If you plan on sitting 8 to 10 feet away from the 80s, you won't need more than 1 Watt nominal. For the majority of material, this receiver will serve you just fine. Just make sure you ventilate it well.

Heh... his username isn't encouraging on that front. ;\)

FYI, I run my M80s with an H/K AVR525, a 5 yr old receiver that puts out an estimated 75wpc (conservative). You should be ok as long as you don't playitloud. ;\)

Well then, an A1400 for each channel should suffice \:\) .

Hi all and thank for your input. I don't think I will be playing it too loud for movies, the room is not big and i got little kids and I don't want them to think that something is wrong with his dad. However, for music it can be another thing. We can listen (my wife and the kids) to music at fairly decent levels to dance a few songs every now and then, but for that I will be running at 2.1 ch. Yes, I will be adding a little fan if it get too hot.

It doesn't sound like it will catch on fire! Or damage the new speakers - that was my main concern. Thanks again and we'll see how it does.

Yeah, the A1400 would be nice, but I am buying a new 52" LCD and a blueray, so funds are running low.
