question: how will the m80s sound in comparison to the m60s, for stereo music in a small room setup? (like an apartment)

Loud, the m60's are great speakers and Imo would be perfect in a smaller space for anyone looking for floorstanders.

I noticed that the M80s played with more detail at lower volume levels than the M60, once you start to increase the volume, say near reference levels, the differences went away. I have my M80s in a 12X16 'L' shaped room where the other part of the 'L' is also 12X16.

Hmm. Well, I opted for the 80s over the 60s for an apartment livingroom that is 20x11x8 and I wasn't even considering them before I did an a/b comparison.

No doubt they will go much louder than I will ever need, but they also present more detail in the mids and highs, and more bass extension.

I really noticed the extra detail with cymbals and the kick-drum, and to a lesser degree with other instruments.

I think that it depends on what music you are going to listen to and how well recorded it is. In my case, I was auditioning with Dire Straits, Peter Gabriel and ELP, all well recorded albums.

I will be listening to a mix of (well recorded) rock, jazz and classical so I will benefit from the step up to the M80.

If you look at a post by sovkiller you will see that not so great recordings sound not so great on the M80 because of the detail they present.

Instead of getting the m80s I got the m60s and so far I am pretty happy with them right now. I guess I don't know what I am missing since I have not heard the m80s yet...

What if I take that extra $300 dollars or so and invest in a better AMP, let's say a Yamaha RXV1700 and bi-amp the m60s? (I have a crappy sony 70watts right now...)

any advice on that?

Met, if your "crappy" Sony is nevertheless in good working condition and still capable of putting out a clean 70 watts(and if it isn't, there's a violation of the FTC power regulations that all amplifiers sold in the U.S. have to comply with), then spending money on an amplifier with a slightly greater maximum power capacity isn't going to be of benefit unless you're actually using more than the 70 or so watts that your present amp can deliver cleanly(unlikely). A new receiver such as the 1700 will have more up-to-date features, and that could be a reason for considering a replacement, but more maximum power capacity(especially supposedly coming from the fictitious "bi-amp" feature that some receivers advertise)isn't likely to be one. The extra $300 would far more likely be more cost-effective if it was applied toward speakers.

If you are happy with the M60, don't worry, be happy, listen to more music.

I've heard the 60s and the 80s, but not in an A/B comparison. I heard the 60s in my audition and was floored with their quality. They are what convinced me to go with Axiom in the first place, so I really believe that you'd be quite happy with them. In my case, the extra money to upgrade to Axiom's best (80s) was worth it as I didn't want to play the "what if" game in the future. They're both great speakers.

I planned on getting the m60's (partly so I could get by with a cheaper amp) but I could not find any to audition. I auditioned some m80's and instantly doubled my amp budget and added a few hundred dollars to my speaker budget

You guys are ALL missing it...ya'll need to buy some M22s!
