Hi Guys,

I am think of getting the Epic 50 set from axiom, I have a couple of question maybe you guys can help

This is for my basement, this room is oldly shaped..

Would Epic 50 - 350 Home Theater System be good for this room?

I would like to pair these speakers with either Yamaha RX-V1700 or Yamaha RX-V2700

Also I was think I should upgrade to VP150 v2, the reason is that @ my friend’s place the actors are hard to hear but the system is loud. Don’t like to turn up the volume when an actor speaks and turn it down when there is a lot of action going on

Or will the VP100 v2 be good enough for my room size..

Please let me what you guys think.

Is the Epic 50 system good for me?
Which receiver would be better 1700 or 2700

We would using this for main movies and regular TV (SCIFI, Drama and action movies)
Also I had a small HT in a box setup, Kenwood, it was o.k for us.

Now I need to set it up a little 

My room is oddly shaped like yours and the 60's and now 80's have been great.

I think that setup would work fine for your room. You might also consider the m22's or m60's which have been known to give you better detail in the highs. The 50's have been described to be a little more laid back, but this is not always a bad thing.

The 350 is a killer sub for the money, you can't go wrong with that. The 100 or 150 would be fine. It looks like you won't have lot of viewers based on the couch layout, so the 100 might be fine. The 150 helps if you have multiple seating and wider audience.

Either of those receivers would be able to power any of the Axioms I've mentioned with no issues. Just make sure you get all the bells and whistles your wanting.

Any of the Axiom setups, even the smaller bookshelf setups would blow away the HTIB Kenwood out of the water.

That's not a bad room, I wish I had a room I could set up like that.

I can only add that for the center vocals the receivers center channel settings can be bumped up to enhance the speech, a number of us here do this.

Both centers are great with vocals so pick which ever one fits the wallet or even try considering a vertical center like an M2 which can give you better horizontal dispersion.

I think it would work fine.



I think the VP100 would be fine. Unless you play very loud you should be able to just bump up the volume on the VP100 a little bit so that the music and sound effects coming from the main speakers don’t overpower it. Also properly calibrating your system will eliminate much of this problem except for the occasional soundtrack where the center channel is mix to weak for your taste.



If you plan to mainly use this for movies you should seriously consider sirquack’s idea to use the M22s. If I hadn’t planned on listening to 2 channel stereo I would have gone with bookshelf speakers myself. If you make your own stands they are a lot less expensive leaving allowing you to spend that money on other equipment.

Also if you went with M22s for mains and could fit an M22 center like jakewash suggests it would give you the ideal situation of having identical speakers across the front.

I don't have any personal experience with these speakers yet (soon!), so take this with a grain of salt. I've done a lot of research the past few weeks though, so I can share some of what I've learned.

From what I have read on these forums the 350v3 is an awesome sub for it's price. I would go with that if it's in your price range. If you find it lacking you can always return it for a 500, or grab a second 350 to even it out. Your room is about the same size as mine, although oriented a bit differently. I'm going with two 350v3s.

I'd also take the VP150 over the 100 if you can afford it. The price difference isn't nearly as significant as a 350 sub vs 500 or 600. From what I have read there's a bit of a difference. Of all of Axiom's speakers it seems the centers get the most flak, although most of these guys will tell you it's completely unfounded.

As for your friend's system...with a decent receiver you can adjust the center channel to bump up the dialog, that's not really a sign of the quality of the center so much as the setup & calibration. I looked at those Yamahas but decided to go with a Denon 3808 because, like sirquack says, it had all the bells and whistles I was after, and it seems to be a popular choice for Axioms. You can pick it up for about $1000 if you call J&R.

i choose the M50s because the i thought they would be better

but you guys think the m22 would be better then m50???

also i wife likes the look of the M50..

Why is the M22 better.. Plus can u help understand this whole Freq Resp thing.. that seems to be the only difference b/t the M22 and m50??

The M22 is very detailed, the M50s are more laid back. The vocals and mids come through with the same or more intensity as the bass on the M22s. It is the other way around for the M50s.

Just because a speakers response is the same as another they can have very different sonic characteristics.

Kalma, You can get a bit of the detail of the M22 if you upgrade to the M60.

Check out the Factory Outlet for 10% off regular priced items. You might be able to buy your whole setup thru the outlet (which many of us on the forums have done) and get a killer setup for 10% less than normal priced items.

This may allow you to upgrade to the M60s which have one 5.25" driver to provide a better more well rounded speaker outputing a bit more clarity than the M50s.

I was quite happy with the M50s for several years.

I'm happier with the M80s. Just to add to your angst.

I'll say it again. The 80s are one of the best values in audio. There are some things that you simply marvel at. The 80s are one (two ) of those things.

I guess the question is, how much money do you have to spend, and what can you get away with from your wife as far as aesthetics are concerned?

Run the Home Theater Wizard if you haven't. That's where I started and it was a huge help. It's the main reason I ended up digging into these forums which eventually lead to me making my purchase.

i ran the Home Theater Wizard and it pointed me to epic M50.. thats why i choose it..

2000 was my budget i move to 2150 for thr epic m50..

i might juts stay with that or
but the v150 and m60 from the factory outlet and get it for 2200

But i am worried how the factory outlet speaker will look..
just for the looks ????

I ordered 6 speakers from the factory outlet and they were all in perfect condition except my subwoofer, which had a small scratch on the back under teh amp plate where no one will ever see it.

The F.O is a great deal and most of us on here have speakers from there. They have only minor or no defects that the owners have found and still have that great Axiom sound.

I still haven't found anything wrong with my FO speakers...

The only bad thing about the factory outlet in my opinion is the additional wait. 4 of my 5 speakers were perfect, one had a small scratch only I would notice.

I ordered a complete set from the factory outlet and didn’t find anything wrong with them. Axiom must have insanely strict quality controls to say they were in any way defective.

Also, even though my order was suppose to take 5 weeks to ship they actually shipped in in less than 3 weeks so you may not have to wait the full length of time stated.
