Hi All- I'm new here and don't yet own Axiom speakers.

I'm about to start building a house in Vancouver and am just finalizing the construction drawings. I've heard great things about Axiom speakers and am interested in using their in-wall series for a Great Room home theatre.

I'm planning on the W22/W150 front & center speakers, but the rear of the room exits to the patio and doesn't lend itself to wall or floor speakers (nana doors). Any thoughts on using the W3 speakers as Rears, and mounting them in the ceiling (its vaulted and slightly angled towards the center of the room) - or am I making a schoolboy error somehow?

Also, I'll probably pick up a high end Yamaha or Denon AVR, but I'm only planning on going with a 5.1 setup. Is 7.1 really worth it? Would I honestly notice the difference? (especially considering this is not a dedicated home theatre room)

Any other advice before finalizing the design?

Thanks very much for any help or guidance,

Peter

YOu can still use the QS8's with a ceiling mounting bracket that will lower the QS8 from the ceiling. I wouldn't recommend using M3s in the ceiling, as they in-wall speakers just weren't simply designed to hang like that.

Also, by rears you mean "sides" right? are running a 5.1 or 7.1 system? If 5.1, your "side" surrounds should be at a 90 degree angle to your listening position, or perhaps 1 or 2 feet back. But by no means should they be on the back wall (unless you have no other choice).

Thanks! I'm very glad I asked.

I guess I do mean Sides (5.1), and there may be a spot to put the QS8s on the sides.... They may be a bit high (either ceiling hung or above ceiling level in a vaulted ceiling) and one side might be further from the listening position than the other. Will that be a serious problem?

Thanks!

Peter, welcome. If you have a significant amount of room behind your listening position to form a rear soundfield(say at least 4')then yes, using a 7.1 speaker setup with your Yamaha or Denon would be of benefit.

The side surrounds being at different distances wouldn't be a serious problem since their sound levels can be calibrated so as to be equal at the listening position.

The Q's do a very good job mounted on a wall at various heights. Mine are about 7ft up and hanging from a boxed in area for our cooling/heating duct work. Many have them higher yet.

Much appreciated guys.... if mounted on the side walls (in the vaulted ceiling), mine will be just above the 9 foot level.

Worth putting in a rear? or is it splitting hairs at this point?
