New pair of M60's, one bad?

Just got my setup last weekend and finally got around to setting them up. Got two M60's, VP150, and 2 QS8's. Did the test tone and noticed one of the M60's sounds different. One matched the VP150 perfectly and the other, well it sounded like it was muffled and not hitting higher frequencies. I switched the wiring around so it was using the same speaker terminal as the good one. No change and the other M60 sounded fine on the bad ones terminal.

So bad speaker?

Stick your ear up against the drivers on the bad speaker and see if you can hear if all the drivers are working. If only the tweeter isn't working (and you're willing to break out the screwdriver), you can unscrew it and check the connections. Sometimes they jiggle loose during shipping. If both the tweeter and the midrange aren't working, check the straps between the binding posts on that speaker. One may have come loose, which would result in signal only being sent to the woofers on that speaker (assuming you've got the cables hooked up to the bottom posts).

Just checked more closely. It sounds like its just the tweeter. I here nothing coming out of it during test tones. Just noise from the mid range. I will call axiom tomorrow before I crack it open. Don't want to void my warranty or anything.

The straps thing seems to be much more common and easily fixable!

You will not void any warranty, that is what they will tell you to check if you call their 800#, they are available late EST.

Also, it is interesting you thing the one good 60 sounds similar to the vp150 with the test tones. Is this the receiver pink noise? My 2 vp150's I've owned have always sounded more muffled compared to 60's or 80's. Many have mentioned this in the past.

Mike, since you say that you heard something from the mid-range driver but not the tweeter, it appears that the internal wiring to the tweeter may be loose. But just to be sure that it isn't the connecting strip on the terminals that Ken and Mark have mentioned, try connecting the speaker wire to the upper set of terminals(if you now have it connected to the lower set).

Yah it's pink noise. The two sound very alike compared to the "bad" M60. Seems to be very balanced, which was something I was worried about as I always thought the fronts should all be the same speaker for that reason.

That I did not try. I will try using the upper terminals tomorrow. If that still doesn't work I will call them up and pull out that tweeter.

Thanks for the help guys. I will let you know how it goes either way.

Well called axiom they are just sending me a new tweeter, did not even ask me to take it out and check the wiring. However once I hung up I took a stab at it. Removed it, while the connections had a little play, they were on the terminals. Once I put the tweeter back in, surprise it worked! So not sure what I did, guess it was the wiring? Should I crimp it on harder?

sounds like a loose connection, crimping a little might help so it keeps good contact.

It might be worthwhile to let Axiom know what the problem was.

Sometimes wierd things happen on assembly line. Axiom may want to check their assembly line and see if they can figure out what happened.

I understand that they quality check all of their units and I was very impressed with their packing boxes, so I am wondering why you had issues.
