hi,
this is my first post here. I just bought a set of outdoor algonquins to go with my denon 3808 reciever. I have these mounted under a covered patio about 14 feet apart. they just don't sound like i had hoped. they have a 'muffled' or small sound. maybe this is just as good as it gets for outdoor speakers? should i mount them further apart? i have them connected to zone 2 of my denon receiver if that makes any difference. thanks.

How are they mounted? If the front of the speakers are unobstructed and you have them mounted so the rear of the speakers is close to a wall (for bass reinforcement), then they shouldn't sound muffled. Also, placing them further apart won't likely help.

Have you tried listening to them in your house to verify that it's just how they're mounted and not the speakers themselves that are below par?

Also, how do you have them setup in the speaker setup menu in the receiver? Have you verified you have the cable hooked up with the proper polarity?

Good call on the polarity Randy. Having them hooked up out-of-phase would definitely make them sound muffled.

i made some adjustments in the setup menu for each speaker, left and right. Its seems that this reciever allows you to set the decible level for each left and right speaker. I increased this on both of them to +7Db and I'm getting more sound now. This is a very advanced reciever, and it is all very new to me. This is all of the settings that I can find to work with for my zone 2. I'm not sure about polarity. Could someone explain how I check for that? I can tell you that we hooked the postive to the postive and the negative to the negative. The speaker wire is marked with numbers on one side.

Just make sure that the number side is hooked up to the post of the same polarity on both the speaker and receiver. If the numbered side of the cable is hooked up to the + post on the receiver, make sure it is also hooked up to the + side of the speaker.

All receivers allow you to adjust for the dB levels. +7 seems kind of high. You should be able to just adjust the main volume to a level that is satisfying. Are you in Stereo mode?
