Even I've mostly felt that the Axioms are too bright for metal. However, if I have to make a choice of excellent recordings, I would go with these:

Bon Jovi: Keep the Faith
Metallica: Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, Kill 'em All
Judas Priest: Metal Works (This recording is lovely)
Rammstein: Mutter, Sehnsucht, Herzeleid (Asche zu Asche is fantastic in this album)
Cinderella: Night Songs
Metallica: S&M (Really punishes the speakers with so many instruments)

Most of AC/DC's recordings have too much boom in the upper bass area. Megadeth's recordings were hollow on some albums though I don't remember which ones. Iron Maiden was too noisy.

I'm not aware of the new bands. Perhaps Linkin Park is worth a mention as their songs sounded like they had good recordings.

In fact, even today, I restrict myself from listening to rock music on the axioms and prefer to hear them through my Sennheiser headphones. All other forms of non-rock music seem to sound better on the Axioms. I haven't been able to pinpoint why but it just is.

I bet it has more to do with the quality of the recordings than the quality of the speakers. I can't say that I listen to much in the way of metal, but stuff like Lead Zeppilin sounds just fine on my M80s.

I agree. Most of the recordings are too bright and "in-your-face". The ones I've listed seem to be sensibly done according to me.

Hey Auqua,
I used to have the Cinderella: Night Songs on cassette, back in the day, and loved it. That is until a friend of mine pointed out that the lead singer sounded just like Marge Simpson. I just couldn't listen to it anymore after that. LOL

I know I'm late into this, but AC/DC live at Donnington DVD is spectacular.

Agreed! I crank that one even when I'm not withing viewing distance of the TV sometimes.

Heard the new Soulfly on the weekend. Gutteral singing but musical. Sounded like it was well recorded but it was in my Jeep so I can't tell for sure.

They throw in a Brazilian, Tribal influence to their otherwise, borderline, thrash metal, if you have never heard them.
