Although DVD Audio and SACD sound terrific, they could sound much better.

Those damn music pirates are ruining it for the rest of us!

Dan,

If you're around, just wondering what mixes on the Juber DVD-A (or other AIX discs) you've tried and prefer. For those of you who don't own an AIX disc, they all offer 4 audio options: Hi-res (96khz) 5.1, Hi-res 2.0, DTS 5.1 and DD 5.1.

I had listened to all of the 5.1 mixes before (they all sound great--the Hi-res has the best fidelity, but then I have the problem of no bass management for DVD-A), but this morning I used the 96khz Hi-res 2.0, and it sounds simply amazing.

I'm no expert, but I had thought that Hi-res tracks could only be played through the analog cables, not digital. I obviously have the analog cables connected for DVD-A, but I was using the digital connection to my receiver for the Hi-res 2.0 track, and my H/K AVR520 showed 96khz on its display to show that it was getting the Hi-res track. Plus, by using the digital connection, my receiver was able to perform bass management. So, I may have found the best balance for me. Hi-res sound, with bass management as well. Of course, it's not 5.1 this way so I would sacrifice surround sound.

gem, morning. i got the guitar noir and cherly bentine(sp) at the same time. just fired up noir, pressed 6 channel on the yammi, which does allow bass & trebel adjustments. my wife couldn't hear the difference, but i can. called aix this week and ordered 5 more discs; pre-ordered the jennifer warren special edition. unfortunately i don't know of many of the artists. i figured if i ordered the christmas disc i wouldn't be in too much trouble with the wife for spending so much $$$. so my favorite..not sure, depends on my mood. these discs have forced me to listen to my older cd's less and less because the aix's sound so much better. funny, listen to aix recordings at home, and have an risc 6000 running aix software at work; must have been fate. enough rambling, i'll give impressions of the other discs after they arrive.

Dan, just to clarify a point of terminology, when it was mentioned previously that your player and receiver wouldn't allow "bass management" on the 6 analog inputs, this had nothing to do with the regular bass and treble tone controls, which always work. What can't be done is sending bass from your "small" speakers to your sub, with the result that you lose some ability to reproduce low bass, and which presumably would be noticeable at times.

Enjoy the music, not the equipment.
