Just came across this website yesterday showing different types of players that will play flac files. Here's another link with a couple players that will play lossless music.

all that ripping you have been doing......you get to do it again into MP3, I seem to remember Tom posting something about Media Monkey being able to do this on the fly.

Here's another link that may interest you. Apparently you can load "Rockbox" firmware onto your iPod which will enable it to playback flac files.

Thanks Cam, I had forgotten about the FLAC site! Although a very quick Google search for a few of those portable players listed shows they are no longer avaialable, except possibly used.

FLAC files are still pretty big.
I used the flac2mp3 script to create a parallel library. Worked for me.
I think the PAY version of MediaMonkey will do the conversion on-the-fly when you sync, but I'm just as happy just keeping two copies since storage is cheap.

Sorry, rip was the wrong word, I should have said convert FLAC to MP3 but it is easier as Anthony mentions by scripting, but still a pain. I have used Winamp for all my ripping to FLAC and then I just have it convert the FLAC file to AAC for my wife's iPod. This issue was the reason (i.e. laziness was the reason) I didn't end up going to FLAC, plus the fact that I can't hear the difference between a 320 kbps MP3 and a FLAC file. I wish I could though! I maintain dual library of flac and mp3. However, even if my MP3 player could handle it, the differences in flac files sizes don't make it practical for me.
I bought an 80GB Zune because I couldn't stand trying to figure out what I would delete in order to make room for new music. It's half full now of MP3s and just a few select photos. (I'm not a fan of tiny screen video, so none of those yet.) If I had gone with FLAC, I'd just be in the same boat again having to delete stuff all the time.
With great power comes Awesome irresponsibility.

The Zune player was a great choice, I love mine. Here's a couple links for you to check your, which are accessories for virtually any player, both of which I have. I would seriously recommend the screen protector, the decal is just for personalization but it does offer some protection from scratches. javoedge Although not on a Zune player, the video below will give you an idea on how to install it. javoedge installation Decalgirl.com also has decals for the PS3 and Xbox 360 etc. Decal girl
