(You know who you are!) How come I never heard word here that Snakes and Arrows was available in a 5.1 version?

Because it's not a real DVD-Audio disc--it's Dolby Digital, which means it's compressed.
I'm just trying to find an excuse not to be pissed at myself for just buying the plain jane CD version.

Every time someone mentions Snakes and Arrows I think of Chutes and Ladders, and now Wikipedia tells me it's also known as Snakes and Ladders, so I guess it makes even more sense.

"'Chutes and Arrows" would make a good title for a western movie where Paratroopers invade an Indian Casino.

So.... do I get in trouble for mentioning that "Exit...Stage Left" is my only Rush disc? (Well, I have a two-disc best-of, but that doesn't count, right?). Like many performers, if I hear a very good live performance first, the studio stuff always sounds so.... sterile. Eric:

Indians invaded the casino by parachute at the end of Casino Royale (1967) so turnabout’s fair play.

Just to set the record straight... JP, Dave, Shaun, me and others discussed the 5.1 MVI disk 15 months ago. Although obviously not to Mark's satisfaction.

Tom, your link didn't work for me, so I deleted the last "f" from the url and it works. If anyone else has the same problem, then here's a link that worked for me.

One of the best (imho) Rush songs to play at nigh-unbearable volumes is The Camera Eye, the track that precedes Witch Hunt on Moving Pictures.

I agree with Tom. Mark should be punished by at least 160-200 posts, which will bring him back under 3000. 5.1 question have no business in the "Stereo" forum.

Mark - my copy of the Snakes & Arrows album in 5.1 came while I was traveling this week and I'm now sitting back in my theater enjoying it.
It is a very nice audio mix. The surround sound is blended very well to the point of not being distinctly noticeable save for the feeling of immersion you have while listening to the tracks. It's a nice addition to my library, especially having picked it up used off Amazon for the price of what the CD probably cost originally.
Thanks for the recommendation.

I'm thinking of getting the snakes and arrown blue ray, however, two things are holding me back - the guys seemed a little sloppy on the snakes and arrows live CD (specifically geddy's voice) compared to previous performances, and I already have several of their concert DVDs.
I guess i'd like to hear feedback on it first, but the blue-ray is very tempting. The review online said that there were a lot of good angles for drummers / musicians to watch the instruments as opposed to just panning the crowd etc.
and btw, I just bought some m60s (n00b thread) and I've never heard rush sound better (they're my favorite band)

If you head over to the rushisaband website there are plenty of early reviews of the DVD. The comments so far are stating that this is their best DVD. I am picking up my copy tomorrow

So I bought the Snakes and Arrows bluray on Tuesday and decided to watch it tonight. The sound and video are great. This disc focuses more on the band compared to my other favorite Rush in Rio where the crowd is on a feeding frenzy. The S & A disc is more the group and it's music and it's easier for me to just enjoy that music. Now if only they would release some of their cd's in SACD I would be happier. I don't think any Rush fan would be disappointed in this disc.

I agree, though I've only watched ~6 songs so far. I admit, I skipped to the end to hear The Spirit of Radio as it has always been my favorite song to hear/see them do live.
2 hours and 50 minutes of concert footage, plus all the extras, which I haven't even looked at yet. What I've seen and heard thus far is very good. I find the mix captures the "live" sound very well, much better than other concert DVDs of Rush I've heard.
Looking forward to more time to watch this weekend.

I loved it. The sound quality is great, and as a drummer, I loved all of the shots of Peart playing. I can finally figure out what the heck is gong on behind those cymbals =)
unfortunately the bonus content is not in HD (though it was originally recorded in Hd, I don't understand why they down-converted it for the Blu-Ray version)
Personally, though the song selection is great for Rio, I wasn't that big of a fan of the DVD because of all of the ambient fan noise and crowd pans. (I feel the same way about a lot of live shows)
then again, I haven't listened to any of my other rush DVDs on my axioms yet.

I couldn't figure out either why the Atlanta show wasn't in HD although the picture quality is still top notch. Rush In Rio is a noisy DVD however it is enjoyable because it is different. R30 is a much cleaner looking performance than Rio. Snakes and Arrows Live has given us superior sound and video

I plan on looking at it again later, but when i played the BRD yesterday i thought something was seriously wrong with the mix. The band's sound seems kinda low in the mix and almost like there was too much fake echo applied in post with hints of over compression. It was so bad, I did a triple take on my system to see if anything had blown. I'd cycled through some other sources: other concerts, films, games, etc. And everything still seems to be in order, I just think they really missed the mark on the sound on this disc.
Maybe I need a do-over or something on some different tracks, as I tried both the surround and stereo mixes and was pretty disappointed.

Do you run with Audyssey on? In my case, I had to turn it off for it to sound "normal." It's the only BluRay for which I've had to make the adjustment to this point... odd.

There must be something seriously wrong with the disc or your system. I have watched/listened to the regular disc on my Axioms and the Blu-Ray version on my friend's super expensive home theatre system ($25K) and we both agreed that this is one of the best sounding concerts Rush has released. Hope you can solve the problem.

Nope, I don't run Audyssey. Manually calibrated with a meter. The Rush disc sounded so bad, I actually leaped from my chair looking for blown equipment and went and grabbed a bunch of movies and other stuff to test it with to make sure everything was going. I probably have 40 or 50 BRDs, and a handful of music ones. So far this is the only one sounding this bad. It's like someone help up a mic in the middle of the space, added an extra crappy reverb effect and compressed the heck out of everything.

I just got the Blu-ray concert in the mail yesterday, and I listened to some songs today. I agree, the picture and direction are great. No more excessively fast editing like on Rio - there's plenty of great angles from which to see all the musicianship properly.
At first, my sound was only coming out of the center channel, sub, and a little out of the surrounds. I put my ear up to the L and R fronts, and nothing was coming out. I tried changing the sound output via the disc, but all it wanted to pipe out was the DTS mix. I checked my prepro, and it was set to Dolby Pro Logic, movie type. My Outlaw 990 doesn't do the lossless DTS, whatever that's called, but it does older DTS, and when I set it to DTS, then my sound greatly improved.
I suspect you've already checked this out, but, StuntGibbon, have you made sure that your receiver is set to a DTS setting?

Yeah, I went through all the surround options on my receiver. Just seems like a poorly mixed concert, unfortunately. I'd hate to have to re-balance all the levels just for this one disc. I think i'd have to pull the surrounds down a lot to pull down the crowd noise in the rears (which currently almost drowns out the music).
Maybe it's my ears for this one thing, who knows. I've seen some mixed reports in other audiophile message boards as well. I also ran the new BRD of Wanted this weekend, which sounded great. (so i'm still thinking my system's fine)

He did comment on the spaciousness others have mentioned here in the past, but you're right, overall this is as glowing a review as I've ever seen over there. ...the audio is as good as the picture quality with just one problem that seems to dog every rock and roll music video release I have reviewed. The sound field is huge, stretching across the entire width of my room, from floor to ceiling, and from the just in front my speakers to the front wall of my home theater.

While working this morning, I have "An Evening with Godsmack...Live from the House of Blues" DVD playing in the background (It was included with the Best-of "Ten Years of Godsmack" CD). Excellent CD and DVD. Anyway, during the concert, Sully mentions that the inspiration for a particular song was taken from Neil Pearts' Ghost Rider book. I didn't even realize that Peart had written books. Anybody ever read one? Any good? The specific book linked to above deals with his 55,000 mile, 14-month motorcycle "find his self" journey after his wife and daughter died. It sounds like an interesting book....

I started that book a couple of years ago but didn't finish it, not so much because it was bad (it wasn't, it was pretty decent), but because I am not that big of a reader.
I have thought about picking it up again, and another of his, the one about road songs, seems interesting as well. He's an extremely literate guy.
I'd say go for it.

Yes, Neil is very literate. I haven't read Ghost Rider but I understand it is very well written, but some are critical of Neil's understated emotion on a personal level. I suspect that even as he wrote a book to help himself heal over the double tragedy he suffered, there is still a sense of protection on such a personal matter. I'm glad he had the strength to play music again, that must have been difficult.

Ghost Rider is a very interesting read when you see how far Neil has come from his personal tragedies. The Masked Rider: Cycling In West Africa is worth reading as well. When you finish this book you wonder why anyone would take on such an excursion! I haven't gotten around to reading his other two books yet however they are on my list.

*bump - this is copied from my blog*
This is my first week back at work after a Disney (WDW) vacation. While down there, I went to the Virgin Megastore and spent a couple of hours browsing CDs, picking up a lot of $5, $8, and $10 specials.
When Nolan (my 3 year old) found out I went to the CD store, he asked (unprompted, I swear), "Was there a new Rush?"
Talk about a proud papa moment.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction tonight, with Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins.
About damn time. And WOOT!
I've enjoyed reading all the interviews this week, and continue to admire people like Alex and Geddy who can graciously answer the same questions over and over again.
Listened to Clockwork Angels in the car this morning. One of the articles said they consider it to be their best album. I wonder if they always think that about their most recent work.
My many interactions with other Rush fans on these boards have brought me a lot of joy.
Salut!

(from rush.com) Ottawa (ON) – Just in time for the celebration of Canadian music and musicians at the JUNO awards next week, Canada Post is proud to give Canadians a preview of this edition of the Canadian Recording Artist stamp series, to be released in July, featuring for the first time, Canadian bands. Beau Dommage, Rush, The Guess Who and The Tragically Hip will be spotlighted in this fourth issue in a series created to honour musical legends. “This year’s series features Canadian bands that have shaped the music industry in Canada,” says Jim Phillips, Director of Stamp Services for Canada Post. “Each band has achieved national acclaim, along with international radio air-time and extensive tours.”

Thanks Mark.
Nice to see a band admit they used sucky mastering techniques and actually do something about it.
I can't wait for the Clockworks Angels BR. From a technical perspective (visuals, content, sound, the show vs. the music balance, etc.) that was the best produced concert I have ever seen. I've had more 'fun' at a couple of other concerts but it blew me away for quality.

Evidently, Mark, despite the name, they seem to be in no hurry. Great album but if I'm going to pay over $7.00 a song (It's 43.86 on Amazon.CA) for songs I already own, I'm going to have hear some fantabalistic AdIoPiLE reviews before I make that re-investment.
