I have to say that this version is just incredible.

It's actually nice looking now, not to mention that its sound is just far superior to that of Winamp and Windows Media Player (not to mention the 'dirty players' such as Real, etc.)

If you get it, get this special edition that has all of the plugins and has that cool 'simple spectrum' visualization.
Foobar 2000 Special Edition

Do the full install .

PS - The horrible quicky jpeg compression (with just paint) doesn't do this picture justice. The spectrum is muuuch prettier than that.

Bah! No one else uses Foobar 2000? Shame on you windows users using Winamp and Widnows Media Player for audio. Although I must say, I love WMP 9 video compression, along with its support for 5.1 audio. So much smaller than comparable VOB files.

Ahh, cool - paying for digital music - a good concept...
How is that by the way? The files the iTunes downloads are AAC's or MPEG Layer 4 Audio, correct? If so, foobar should be able to play it...

iTunes is more than just a music purchasing tool. Sure, it gives you access to the Apple Music store, but as a player and music library organization tool -- nothing I've used comes close.

Indeed.

So that's why it has gotten so popular .

I downloaded some random track the other night just to get a feel for the experience. It was slow to download but I assume the transition from such a small pool of potential customers to everyone else may put a strain on a company. That's not really my interest, though as they still contain DRM and I have serious trouble with the concept of paying for a heavily compressed file. The sound quality wasn't bad but it's far from CD quality. If you expect me to pay a buck for a song, it better be a losslessly compressed file.

The player, on the other hand, is a dream. Its treatment of library management is very elegant and it allows me to very quickly find what I want. It only took me 20 minutes to repair all the missing ID3 tags. That said, it's missing some key options that may keep me from using it in the long run.

As to foobar and iTunes playing together, I'm not sure if Foobar supports AAC. While it's built on MP4, it's not MP4 so the ability to play MP4 specifically isn't enough, as far as I'm aware.

In reply to:

Audio formats supported "out-of-the-box": WAV, AIFF, VOC, AU, SND, Ogg Vorbis, MPC, MP2, MP3
Audio formats supported through official addons: MPEG-4 AAC, FLAC, OggFLAC, Monkey's Audio, WavPack, Speex, CDDA, TFMX, SPC, various MOD types; extraction on-the-fly from RAR, 7-ZIP & ZIP archives

Heh - Yea, it supports AAC if you get the special edition version that I linked that has most every plugin integrated in the small 2 mb package. But I'd imagine that the DRM may prevent some from working.
