As the subject says I have so many questions, so here is a few I have and if you can help me out that would be cool. ;\)

First I have decided to get the Epic 80 - 600 Home Theater System,
well not right this month, got second job just to get these speakers and need to save up some more.

Anyway I will be getting the 7.1 set up for my house, or would the 7.2 be better and if so (I know this may sound dumb) why can't I find a 7.2 receiver only 7.1

Also if I did get a a/v receiver would it work with the Epic 80 since they are 4ohm and not 8 or 6.

IF I can not use a a/v receiver would a amp/preamp set up be better for this.

Also for the back/rear speakers would the QS8 or the M22 be better?

I have been looking at a/v receivers and amps/preamp and ect for days now and understand most of the stuff but still need some help to clear some stuff up. thanks again

Hi, 7.1 is 2 main speakers, 1 center speaker, 2 surround speakers, 2 back speakers and 1 sub. The 7.2 is everything as above plus an extra sub. From my understanding you link the subs together. Someone else maybe able to explain a lot better. Also I don't think there are many movies etc that take full advantage of 7.1 yet.

From what I have read here the Denon receivers will run the M80's.

As for the question about the QS8's, they are designed to be used as surrounds and would give you a better sound field. The M22's would be directional. The QS8's are very good, I had a set of Yamaha bookshelf speakers as my surrounds and then bought the QS8's, the difference was amazing.

I am sure other who have a lot more experience will chime in and explain things in more detail.

Hey Rage... welcome to the forums!

Just to add a bit to Graeme's "already good" answer....

The ".1" channel, is the Low Frequency Effects channel, of LFE. It's a mono signal so there's really no point in a receiver having 7.2 output. What some receivers DO offer is two subwoofer output jacks in case someone wants to run two subs.... but both jacks are carrying the same signal. Many subs offer a pass-though output anyway so you can daisy chain two subs and, barring all the other options, you can just use a Y splitter from the receiver's sub output.

Many here have found that adding the two extra speakers for 7.1 hasn't added a whole lot to the experience...(possibly because the Axiom QS4 and QS8 speakers diffuse the surround information so well already). The listening room might be the biggest factor (is there substantial room behind the listening room, or is there a couch up against the wall so the rear speakers are just over your head anyway?).

Denon seems to be the receiver of choice for driving M80s. If you have a particularly large room or like it really loud, you can always use a receiver's pre-amp "outs' to add another amp. Even a high power two channel amp to drive your front speakers would take the load off the receiver for the highest demand channels and the lowest impedance speakers...

Thanks you cleared up lots, thanks for the help, I will look up more on denon receivers today. Now the Denon AVR-4308CI any good? What I mean is, will spending 2-3k more on the Denon AVR-5308CI make a big difference. I know some will say you don't need to spend that much but I want to get a receiver to last me at least 10 ys since 2-4k is hard to come by now for a receiver.

It depends on the features your looking for, get the bells and whistles that meet your needs. If your talking about power (watts), there is very little difference between a receiver that has 80watts compared to say 100-120 watts. You don't need to spend tons of money on a receiver, unless you want to. \:\)

ok sirquack, I fell prey to more watts=better. Also would just getting the Epic 60 - 600 be better/price/stress on a receiver since it was said that I may need to use my receiver's pre-amp to take the stress off the receiver, just thinking of price too.

The difference between 50 and 100 watts is only a few dB's. The subwoofers have their own amps, so no stress on the receiver. Axiom speakers are very efficient and easy to drive by most receivers. In the past their have been some receivers from Yammy and Onkyo, and a few others that have had issues driving the 80's, but you won't have any problems with most of the current solid state receivers, especially Denon.

A lot depends on your room size, levels you listen to, etc. The 60's and 80's are both great speakers. Also, if you order from the Factory Outlet you save an additional 10%.

There is a very good, and worthwhile advantage to use multiple subs. The ‘extra’ .x just helps set the subs up with the audio processor, but you can do that the old fashioned way too.

The only folks that advocate 7 channel over 5 channel on this board are those that have 7 channel and have been watching Blue Ray and HD/DVD since day one, or, have large rooms. The discrete 6 and 7 channel sound tracks on many BR and HD/DVD disks add another level of enjoyment over typical 5 channel sound tracks that are matrixed into 7 channel with post processing. Definitely go with 7 channel.

The 4308, in my opinion, fills a very small nitch of users at a substantial premium over the 3808. However, if you can swing it, the 5308 is one heck of an AVR. Don’t get hung up with the WPC rating, as that means very little. What the 5308 has over the 3808 is vastly improved video performance with the Realta chip. The Realta is the current king of the hill, and it commands a hefty price tag.

Rage, a large number of us on this forum run the M80s with the Denon 3808 and it has pretty much all the great features of the 5308 for a fraction of the price, the biggest thing you loose is the Realta video upscaling, you get Faroudja Dcdi instead. Unless you absolutely need the best video upscaler out there, I think there is no reason the get the 5308 and if you do not need wifi for netowrk connectivty then the 4308 is pointless, which leaves the 3808 as the best deal that still gives you network connectity, 1080 video upscaling or pass thru and rock solid amplification.

The upper end Onkyo's are THX rated which means they can support 4 ohm speakers as well if you want to check them out. I really like the feature set of the 906, which gives you vitrually all the same features as the Denon 5308(Reon video not realta though) for half the price, a great deal if you have the money for a +$2000K receiver.

Too expand on Randy's statement a little more, yes there is only a few db's difference between 50 and 100 watts but for some of the more extreme passages in music or a movie the difference can be noticed at louder volumes especially if you have a large room where you sit a long ways from the speakers. You might only need 1-2 watts for 80- 90 db avg. volumes, but the peaks could take 100watts or more(again depending on room environment) which is why so many of these midline grade receivers try to give you around 100watts or more of power, just to cover the peaks in the source material, which will actually protect your speakers from damage because the amp won't be clipping/distorting the signal. It is this clipped distorted signal that will kill speakers fast.

Rage96, have you considered getting a 5.2 system? I ask because

a) you're getting a second job to pay for this so biggest bang for the buck does matter
b) It's a lot easier to get smooth bass with two capable subs (and EP-500 are very capable)
c) You don't get *that* much more out of the two rears than having just two surrounds.

So an Epic80/2X500 system would be almost the same in terms of price. Or you can even try Epic80-500 to start with and add the extra sub if you feel you need more bass. Something to think about.
