Help!

I need a new way to store my CD's and DVD's. My cd storage unit is a piece of dung. (el cheapo from Best Buy), and the TV stand I've been using to store my DVD's is full. I've got about 12 DVD's stacked on the floor with nowhere to put them!

I'd like to get a high quality unit this time, with plenty of room for growth. (or something expandable in the future). Real wood vs. that crappy particle board stuff.

Right now I have about 150+ DVD's and over 500 CD's. A separate unit for CD's and DVD's is certainly not out of the question.

What do you all use? Is having something custom built going to be crazy expensive?

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!

I'd try visiting an unfinished wood furniture store. You can often find great quality solid wood furniture for reasonable prices. They should also have catalogs for their suppliers from which you can choose from many more models / woods than they have on the sales floor.

Most of these stores will also finish the furniture with a stain and poly of your choice (for an extra charge) if you don't have the time or space to do it yourself.

Thanks for the tip Peter...anyone else have suggestions?

What do you all use? Or does everyone just have stacks of CD's and DVD's all over the floor?

I had stacks and stacks of CD's and DVD's all over the place until I had a carpenter come in and add some shelves to my existing built-in bookcases. I used to have 3 shelves about 2 feet apart on each side of my mantle...now I have 4 DVD and 3 CD sized shelves on each side. He only charged me about $300, and he matched the color and the shape of the shelves very well.

I still have CD's and DVD's all over the place, as they seem to find their way off the shelves, but never back in.

Time to plug my workplace...

Check out Ikea. They've got a pretty good variety of cd/dvd/media storage units. And no, it all doesn't have a slim/trim Swedish look.

Buy a huge hard drive and rip them all to .wav files? I'm thinking of ripping all of mine and adding a small music server to my entertainment center. Plenty of good sound cards out there nowadays.

Add a TV-out vid card and a wireless keyboard then program the keyboard up/down/left/right and keys into my remote.

Good to go. I'll never leave my basement

Switching my system over to a HTPC isn't really in my plans. Thanks for the idea though.

I've actually kicked around the idea of doing something like that on a low budget scale for upstairs though.

I'm using metal storage racks that I got at Linens&Things (which I noticed you have in Los Angeles also).

Here is the DVD rack which holds up to 150 DVDs and measures 18.5" x 5.5" x 45" for $29.99.

Here is the CD rack which holds up to 180 CDs and measures 11" x 5.5" x 43.5" for $19.99.

Here are a few more choices.

Keep the ideas coming. Nothing so far has jumped out at me as "the" solution for me.
