Well, I had the conversation (started 2 hours ago now) and it wasn't good. I was basically told that the new job role that my boss was pushing to create was denied despite efforts from some pretty influencial people within my company. I was then told that I have 4 weeks (until January 15) to find another job within the company or I will be let go.

I've started networking with others in the company, and while there doesn't seem to be a shortage of people willing to be a reference, there just doesn't seem to be a lot of job openings right now (imaging that), and definately none in Iowa. So unless the new job is created, my only option is relocation, and that is only if I can find something that fits my job skills. That would mean uprooting my family (again), trying to sell a house in a terrible market, and paying for relocation since my company doesn't cover it... And again, that is if a job even comes up.

So if anyone knows of something to look into (I understand that there are only a few of us from Iowa here) for a guy that has a BS in Computer Science, has been a PC tech, Server admin, network admin, and manager of all of those groups as well as a support operations manager (what I am now), let me know.

I don’t know of anything specific but this is a good site to check out for job openings.

http://jobsearch.usajobs.gov/

Federal jobs aren’t bad lots of paid holidays and usually good job security (but who knows these days).

I feel for you, Nick, I really do. Tough stuff. Especially this time of year. I work for a small private company (IT: DBA/Developer) that's optimistic about our jobs, but you can never be too sure. Our IT department is as slim as possible right now and seemingly no possibility of hiring anyone new for the foreseeable future. Though if I hear a whiff of anything I'll let you know. IT jobs are few and far between here, and I'd guess it's not much different over there in Iowa.

I have several friends who are IT contractors for the State of Illinois, and they've pretty much all been told that when their contracts expire in 3-6 months they will not be rehired. My wife works for the state too, and brings home constant news of the doom and gloom of state budgets (let alone all the chatter about our beloved governor. ) It's a really bad time for state budgets.

My wife got laid off about 2 years ago. At the time it was a pretty traumatic experience for us. But after a couple of months she found a new job that was significantly better. So yeah, things do have a way of working out. Still, no fun to go through it.

Thoughts, prayers, hopes, and general good karma too you. From one IT guy to another.
