Anthony, the iPhone 3G actually uses both--the towers help it resolve faster than satellites alone.

So location services (eg., showing the unit's location on the map app) will work if it's out of range of a cell tower? If so I should put up my Lowrance unit on eBay.

I haven't tried it (rarely out of range of a cell tower), but afaik, yes.
