I guess that was my point. Personally, I was looking for a 2 channel amp to power the M80s, and I was looking for something that could deliver about 400W at 4 ohm. The shutdown issues with the Emotiva amps have scared me off a bit, and I was hoping that Axiom could fill that void with their product. I have no doubt the Axiom amp is worth every penny of the $1990, but it was not the product I was looking for to fill my current needs.

Rotel offers a class D amp rated at 500 watts into 8 ohms, that would be around 700 watts into 4 ohms, I think. Bryston also offers amps up to 1000 watts into 8 ohms. I think the market here for the Brystons is more for professional applications rather than HT. Bars, clubs, PAs, etc.

I just can't imagine needing 700 wpc in my 4000 cubic foot HT room, I probably don't even need half that.

Hi doormat...the 2200's are indeed a significant upgrade to the 3805 when it comes to higher volume levels. The output is cleaner, tighter, and although I didn't expect it, bass is increased and "punchier" with the M80's. The 2200's have never shut down.

The downside (although minor because I rarely do this) is that I can get the 2200's to clip at extreme levels (110 - 120dbs at about 10ft, bass clips when set to large), and have gotten them toasty to the touch. But... never a shutdown in nearly 3 years.

Yeah, here's hoping they find a way to make it come down. Why not license their new technology to other companies and make up research costs that way? I must admit I'm naive to these things.

All this talk of 500, 700 and 1000 watts is really starting to make my little Rotel amp seem inadequate for the job.

I should have never opened this thread.

The issue here is probably that the power supply is common to the 1400-8 and 1400-2 (they're both 1400-watt amps so it makes some sense ;)), and a P/S that size is both big and expensive to produce.

The electronics were expensive and time-consuming to *develop* but I expect the build cost for the additional channels (between 1400-2 and 1400-8) is lower than than the cost of the power supply and box. There were a few early discussions about this after the 1400-8 came out.

In fairness, most of the requests seemed to be for a 2 or 3 channel version of the 1400-8 rather than say a 600-2 or 700-2 which possibly *would* have been in the hoped-for price range.

Going back a few pages in the thread, in a bizarre twist of fate I received an owner's club e-mail the day after writing that I hadn't received one in ages.

Maybe someone is watching the forums from the shadows? \:\)
