You can tell Apple Software Update not to bug you about Safari. There's a menu item that says "ignore update" or "don't pester me about this update" or something like that.

ok, so my criticism was misdirected.  I was referring to the the iPod's ability to play back the results of the conversion process, not the software's ability to put files onto the iPod. I'm confident mdrew knows that he'll need to use iTunes to load music onto the iPod. Just funny that an Apple user would attribute Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt to Microsoft. If you take an extra long length of foil and fold it in half, dull side in, you get two shiny surfaces for double efficacy.
