I've been using the Moose plugin for accessing filtered versions of my music library for when I want to see only classical verses everything else. I'm a big 'random play' person by I find that classical is the only genre that doesn't mix in well with others. Choosing [Genre] [Classical] works when I want all classical but if you want multiple other genres, excluding classical, you need a separate virtual library such as what Moose accomplishes.

Just wondering if anyone is using another solution for this type of thing as I haven't been looking at any new plugins for quit some time.

I posted this question on the Squeeze center boards and "Muso" was recommended but I will need to try it out as it looks like a PC interface only. I'm looking for filtering at the Squeezebox level to save me a trip to the PC in the basement.

Well Murph, have you tried Erland's tools for custom browsing Multi-libraries? It allows you to create multiple virtual libraries and customize the fields to browse by things like Composer, works, conductor instead of being limited to the usual Artist and Title type browsing!

Here is a link with instructions on how to install the plug-ins and set them up specifically for classical music..

Setup Browse menus for Classical Music

Murph,

Something i have been wondering about the squeezebox duet. Are you able to rate songs with it? Thanks.

Murph, you may have stopped my next purchase.

Question - if I buy a Squeezebox Duet will I start having conversations with myself too?

Of course, based on the advice you gave yourself, that might not be the worst thing. If that does happen, it might be less confusing to myself if I registered again as another user with a different name. That way I could PM my other self if I ever need a question answered.

Fantastic. This plan looks flawless!

Seriously though, to answer some of the questions above, I do not have the Duet version of the Squeezebox. I have the older model where there is no LCD display on the remote control. However, because both models use the same library software called Softsqueeze, I think I can still safely answer your question.

On it's own, I don't think it supports viewing, browsing or sorting by ratings. But......because it is open source software, there are add ins for everything and I do mean everything. You can add extra tags, change the display, even turn the Squeezebox into a live time weather display or call display unit.

The plugins that I just loaded above allow you to integrate all your existing tags, like "rating" or even create your own. You can even create your own menu items in the display to browse by your new tag combinations.

For instance, all my classical music is in flac format. Following Erland's longgggg but simple when taken step by step instructions, I added in tags for Orchestra, Composer, Work and Movement. Then I created menu items so I can now browse just the classical music by choices like "Work by Composer", "Orchestra by Composer", "Work by conductor", etc. Your choices become endless.

You could easily do the same thing for ratings using this tool. However, if you check the plug in lists, you might find an easier to install tool that just adds ratings.
