The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. Very gritty stuff

I killed time on my free afternoon in Ottawa in a Chapters. I picked up a copy of the graphic novel "The Watchmen" for my nephew because I recalled him complaining he lost his copy and wanted to re-read it before the movie comes out this month.

I started into it with the intent of just browsing it a bit out of curiosity and suddenly had it finished before I checked out of the hotel a day later. I'm not saying I wouldn't have enjoyed a simple comic book style, superhero story, but I have to admit, this was much more. It is one of the most dark and complex stories I have read in any format in a long time. A pleasant surprise.

I can't imagine a director of the upcoming movie being able to pull off all the time shifting, sidelines and more importantly the underlying morality and philosophical issues while having to deal with the cheesy costumes required, but if he can, it should be a blockbuster. If he can't, it will go down in serious flames.

With great power comes Awesome irresponsibility.

Hmmm, do I get the graphic novel, or do I get the Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic Blu-ray?

I've been reading the graphic novel this week. Borrowed it from one of my coworkers. Like you, Andrew, I was surprised at how good it was, and I've also been wondering how the movie will come across.

CV, just get the graphic novel!

Ha ha, we'll see. It would be a pretty awesome book club if we all read the same comics.

I finished reading it about a week ago. It was a bit of a strange read for me though, as it is the first graphic novel I've ever read. I'm definitely not used to that format. I think I got enough so I have a good basis for the movie, but not so much that I'll be upset if they have some deviation from the book.

My Booky Wook: A Memoir of Sex, Drugs, and Stand-Up by Russell Brand

It's starting out well. I really like his use of the language.

I'm reading the best news possible, which is that Regina Spektor's done with her new album, and it looks like June for a release. Jeff Lynne was one of the four producers, which made me happy. Almost as happy as her.
