Ladies & Gents,

I am building a dedicated Home Theater for a room that is 24 ft by 13.5 ft with close to 100% light control. I already bought a Denon 3803 from 6ave (great deal at $648) and I ordered a Sanyo Z2 projector. Once I'll get the projector I will probably also buy a 118in 16:9 Carada screen. I also ordered a Pioneer 563, mainly for SACD and DVD-A.

The next step are the speakers and here is my dilemma: should I go with a pair of M22 in front plus a VTF2 or just stay with the M60 (without a sub for now)? For the rest of my setup, I'll have a vp150 and a pair of QS8 as surrounds.
My listening seating will probably be 20 ft from the front speakers and I will have a 60/40 split between (DVDs + HDTV) vs Music (SACD, DVDAudio, etc).

My future plans include a pair of M2 or M3 for a 7.1 system and a HSU VT2 sub (if I will go with the M60).

What do you guys think about this setup ? I am a newbie to this Forum but I've been lurking around for about 2-3 months. I am also an avid reader of AVS forum as well.

Thanks!

If you are going to have buyers remorse going with the M22 instead of the M60 you should get the M60. You really need the sub for HT though. How about this option.

Buy the M2 and the sub now. Use the M2 as the fronts. When you can afford the M60, move the M2 to the rears.

If you're going to be sitting 20' back, you really are going to want the M60ti's. You'll have to push those little M22's pretty hard to give you a real thrilling movie experience if you're sitting that far back. The M60's will be perfect.

I'd also put the extra money into a VTF-3 subwoofer, rather than the extra channels in the rear. Stick with 5.1 and a really kick butt sub. You're room isn't all that large, and if you're sitting 20' back in a 24' room, the added 2 channels aren't going to wow you like a really good sub will.

M60ti
VP150
QS8
Hsu VTF-3

That's my recomendation.

Enjoy you're new gear!

Zarak and Spiffnme, thanks for your replies.

Spiffnme, that is a very good suggestion and my wife would probably love the VTF-3 with the Rosewood touch :-)

You are right, M60s are required for my room size.

My only problem with a 5.1 system is that I won't be able to take full advantage of SACD and DVD-A. Other than that, I think your recommendation is perfect and I will probably go with it. Later on I will probably add the surrounds for a complete 7.1 system (unless you guys think that an 7.1 system might be an overkill for my room?)

Gosh, I really wish the end of the year bonus check would come earlier. There is no way I could have bought all of this gear without it....

How will a 5.1 system limit your DVD-A and SACD enjoyment?

Also...Hsu is having a sale on the Rosewood VTF-3's.

At checkout you need to enter a coupon code. With the code, it's $849.

Visit www.avsforum.com and look for the Hsu banner ad. Just keep refreshing your screen, and it'll come up.

DVD-A and SACD are 5.1 only, so you will not be missing anything with a 5.1 system. The only thing is, a lot of people prefer direct radiating speakers for the surround channels in DVD-A/SACD music. So what they do is they hook up the surround channels from the DVD player into the back surround channels (which are often direct radiators) of the Receiver and then the back surrounds are used instead of the side surrounds.

I personally use my Qs8's for DVD-A and it sounds fantastic, so do not think you have to have direct radiating surrounds for DVD-A/SACD. It is more of a preference, but I promise you the QS8's will not disappoint.

According to conventional wisdom, surrounds in a 5.1 or 6.1 setup should be bi/di/quad pole speakers mounted high and to the sides of the listening position in order to envelop the listener in a non-directional soundfield. Multichannel audio is mastered using 5 identical speakers, with the surrounds being at ear level and slightly behind the listener (+/- 120 degrees). While it is impractical to have 5 M60's for DVD-A and SACD listening, it is practical to have QS4's or 8's mounted high and to the sides for movies, and a pair of direct radiating speakers, say M2's, mounted low and behind for multichannel audio.

I have tried it both ways, and there is no comparison. Listening to multichannel sources with the surrounds as I have suggested above sounds much better to my ears than when I had the surround channels going to my QS4's. If you are serious about multichannel sound, I would go with a 7.1 setup as I have described. Make sure that your receiver/processor has a full set of 7.1 inputs. Since 7.1 uses mono information for the rear channels, sometimes "7.1" receivers/preamps only have 6.1 pre-ins.

Not all SACDs are 5.1. There are plenty of stereo-only SACDs out there.
