I have a 32" TV (Sony Flat (Fat- very heavy) Screen) in an entertainment center. I would like to build a "shelf" inside the cabinet to raise the TV in order to place my center speaker (vp150) underneath the TV. I am looking for advise on dimensions that give the speaker enough "room" and any other thoughts you may have on the subject.

Apart from building the shelf with enough space to move the speaker in and out, you shouldn't need to worry about giving the speaker room to breathe. As a sealed enclosure, the usual boundary issues with ported speakers are not a problem with the VP150.

I agree with fhw's advice. I wouldn't worry too much about the dimensions of the shelf space as long as it provides enough room to easily move the speaker in and out.

On the other hand, even though the VP150 is a sealed design, it will still interact with the surfaces around it, so I wouldn't build the shelf area exactly to size. I'd leave at least a few inches of space behind the VP150 for "tweaking room." If you discover that you don't like how the speaker sounds with the extra space behind it, you can fill the space with foam or other sound absorbing material.

Are the M22i's the same as the 150? My wife has this idea that we'll have bookshelves on each side of the projector (although only say 5 foot high) and then the 22's can go on top. This way they'll effectively be stands. I was a bit worried about this though because I didn't want to get too close to the wall and screw up acoustics.

From the sounds of it, this is only really a problem with ported speakers?

Nope. The M22s are ported in the back, and have 2 mid/woofers and 1 tweeter, while the VP150 is not ported, and has 3 mid/woofers and 2 tweeters. And is longer. (or taller, depending on your perspective!)

I've got a similar deal with bookshelves that I will be putting M22s on. I wouldn't be too worried with them being close to the wall. Just edge them out to the front of the shelves when she's not looking...

x94,

I wouldn't worry too much about having the M22s on bookshelves as long as you have a small amount of flexiblity on where you place the M22s. Ideally, you want your M22s at least a few inches away from the wall since they are ported and you don't want the air from the port to be distorted by the back wall. Also, you want to keep the tweeters at or near ear level.

My current setup has my M22s on a long, low entertainment center. It's a pretty old piece of furniture that was designed to hold a stereo, record player, and records -- but I've made it work for me. Here's a pic I took of it earlier this year. I have some room on either end of the EC to move my speakers forward and backward and closer together or further apart.

Nick, the only other concern I would have is the height of the tweeter in relation to your sitting position. How far back are your seats? With cabinets at 5ft, the tweeter will be around 6ft 4in high, and to me that seems high if you're sitting fairly close. It puts the speaker pretty far off axis.

As usual there's a lot of good points/information to be had here.

I hadn't thought about the listening level issue. Upon further review we'd have to almost build shelves no higher than the picture someone posted. And that's fine...it'll mean less work for me

She's okay with all this because we talked about the possibility of having to have the speakers a certain distance from the wall so she knows there's liable to be complications.

It just goes to show what you don't know. I had my other front speakers (part of a 5 channel shelf system) on the floor. Obviously that wasn't ideal either.

Learning all this stuff is addicting.
