Hey everyone,

The m22's arrived and I'm enjoying the faceoff between them and the M3's.

I got these for my dining room / kitchen, which is a large open room. Unfortunately I can't just put the speakers on stands, because I need them to be in the dining room, facing the kitchen, and a friggin doorway is in the way.

How bad would it be to mount M22's up above a doorway? Is this a terrible no no? We have 11' ceilings, so theres plenty of room up there. This would give me 2' from the side walls, and about 10' in between the two. [but they would be sitting at 8']

The other option is that I mount them on stands, and put them close together in the middle of the room. This would mean they each have about 5' from the side walls, and 4' in between each other - but they'd be at the proper height.

I could also have one 5' from the wall, and the other 2' from the wall, but it would look like crap.

I've been moving them around playing with sound, but I have no way to test out mounting them above, without buying expensive mounts... So any feedback is much appreciated.

I believe the M22s won't be used for critical listening being they are in a dining room/kitchen having them mounted high up won't be a problem, they will still sound great, you may just lose a little soundstage/depth etc.

Agreed. If you want to improve the image a tad, you could aim them down a bit, but I wouldn't even worry about it. For non-critical listening, your [I know, it's you're] going to be very pleased.

I would mount them high and upside-down to get the tweeters a bit closer to your ears and the woofers a bit closer to the ceiling for that tiny extra bit of bass reinforcement.

I was going to remind you to carpet the ceiling to control those nasty first reflections, but decided you might think I was kidding about the upside-down mounting as well.

I was wondering about that. When I get mine, they're going on the mantle, which makes them a little high when we're seated, but upside down would make it pretty close. So you're not kidding?

can I flip the Axiom logo?

PS. you're on Phoronix too right? I have a 4670 on LFS.

I have mine like this and they sound great

The bottom of the speaker is about 6" above my ears when seated.

I have mine mounted using Axiom's "full metal bracket" 5 feet aboveground, but pointing slightly down with a small toe-in, and they sound great.

Wow, thanks for the ideas. The picture helps. My fireplace has a hearth though, which jacks the whole thing up by about a foot. I set the TV higher on the bracket so the center should fit under the TV. The TV is a bit high, but it tilts so I haven't had any neck pain (yet). Maybe I can stick something under the back of the speaker and tilt it forward a bit. I'm resisting putting another hole in the wall (at least in the front). The other thing I worry about is the distance from the wall, only 2-3 inches.

That picture is from when I was doing many experiments, I actually run the M22s as far out as possible leaving them 2-3 inches away from the wall to the side and from the rear port. The mantle is a little shy of 5' off the ground(that is an 8' high ceiling) and I have 1" rubber self adhesive feet stuck to the back of the speakers to give them a little angle down. I think you will have no problems with your set up.

Here is how my M22s are setup. They now have a slight toe-in, but it still looks like that. They should perfect like that. Soundstage is wide and vertically correct (not too high).

Those are on brackets, right? Or are they resting in the shelf? This is probably closer to the height mine will be at, although the listening position may be a bit further back. My room's a bit bigger. I like Jay's idea about the rubber feet.

Edit: D'oh, saw your above post about the bracket.

Being closer to the wall on the back usually just enhances the lower frequencies, I find it makes them sound a tad bit fuller.

They were given a 6-pack of Boréale Cuivrée!
But now they go to Audiopile Anonymous meetings where they learn to give their free will to the Higher Power known as Monster Cables Ink...blot...
